My weight gain since I arrived at uni has made me feel quite depressed. It’s affecting my relationship with my partner, family and univeristy.

Hi and welcome, Annagalli :)

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so down at the moment and wonder whether you've spoken to anyone about it? Maybe your GP could put you in touch with a counsellor? nhs.uk/conditions/counselling/

I'm sure that your partner and family will support you through this difficult time.

We will support you too, just follow this link to our chat thread and a list of all the activities we run. We've found active participation to be key to success, especially with our weigh-ins and Daily Diary.

You're very welcome, just shout out if you need help :)

So sorry you're struggling atm. Have you talked to anyone at uni? Do you know why you've gained weight at uni? Are you living away from home?

You'll find lots of support on here but I'd definitely suggest talking to uni.

Take care 😊

No I haven’t talk to anyone yet, I’m not sure why I’ve gained wait I just feel generally depressed about my size and keep eating. I study nursing and I work so I don’t have time to work out.

I moved 90miles from home

I would talk to uni and your family. They'll be able to help you and there's lots of info/support on here so don't feel you're alone. Let us know how you get on!

So good that you are reaching out. I hope chatting with forum members can help you.

Why have you gained weight sine you’ve arrived at uni?

I’m not sure, I’ve just been down and eating a lot

I’ve just read your answers below and agree that you should be checked out by a doctor. Make an appointment and write down what you eat until your appointment so that you can show what you eat.

Hi annagalli. Uni can be lonely...isolating...expensive...boring...difficult to find friends...homesick...

So unlike the imagined picture.

You really are not alone. Student councellors, student union, lecturers. They are there to help you.

The weight bit can just be something as simple as not having a routine and eating fast food.

If this gets too upsetting for you, you could move closer to home after your first year? Your lecturers can help you with this.

Hi, thank you for your help.

I live with my partner in uni so at least there is someone there.

I always make home cooked meals, I barley eat fast food I don’t understand why I’m putting in weight, I was 10.5 stone when I moved here I’ve been here for a few months and I’m 12.5..

So sorry to hear you’re so down. Are you drinking much alcohol?

Annagalli profile image
Annagalli in reply toEleanorba

No, I have a glass of wine probably couple times a month maybe more but nothing excessive, I’m not a massive drinker at all

in reply toAnnagalli

After reading what you've said I think you should see a GP: it doesn't make sense for you to have gained so much if you aren't eating crap or boozing. I'd get checked out see if anything else is going on. Thyroid problems/pregnancy/whatever

Thank you I will do

So definitely worth seeing your GP as Sammiseal says. Very best of luck to you!

GP will be able to do just a few blood tests. It's best to get checked out.

Try to take a step back. Your weight gain is a symptom not a cause. At uni you generally have access to counselling and/ or coaching, although I would suggest the later, may be a good option if you have access. Your life and circumstances have changed, don't be too hard on yourself.
