Contrary to what you may have been told previously, eating fat doesn’t make you fat. It’s an essential nutrient and very good for keeping you full. Have a look at this for more details healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Hi, Hidden , welcome.
Weight loss is not all about motivation and masochism or counting calories - if you "slim smart" it is not so hard!
Many of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Snacking All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:
Hi Lorraine ! I use an app called FatSecret. I record all of my meals everyday.
It’s one of the easiest apps to use. You can download it for free.
Have a look and see what you think.
It records your calories, fats, recommended daily intake ,carbs .
You record your three meals and snacks.
Hope this helps 👍🤗🤗🎃
Hi Myfi, can you set it to the right calorie count i.e. the one you get from the NHS BMI calculator? I know you can with MyFitnessPal, which is important as MFP is very stingy with their calorie allowance. How does FatSecret's calorie recommendation compare with the NHS BMI calculator?
Yes you can. So once you calculated your NHS BMI you can put that in.
When you put all your info such as height ,age, weight you wantlose etc it will calculate your RDI for you and that’s it. It really is easy to follow.🤗
That's good to hear
So once you have got RDI of calories calculated ,whatever you eat that day will be up to you. You just have to stick to your recommended daily calorie allowance.
So you will for example put in to the chart what you had for breakfast, you will have examples of each breakfast meal and their calories. You choose which you’ve had and then record it. Just stay within your allowance and you can have anything. However be careful not to use too many calories on your snacks.
So it will be like this:breakfast. Lunch. Dinner. Snacks.
Hope this helps.🤗🤗👍x
I get it, thank you Just interested to know how it works
I started with the 12 week plan a couple of years ago but don't count calories now, or anything else. I've lowered carbs (don't have any bread, potatoes, cereal, pasta, rice) and got more relaxed about fats, which is working very well for me.
Yes I’m also trying to cut out carbs not altogether mind you but I’m giving it a try.
Hi BridgeGirl again. I did originally try my fitness pal but found it a bit confusing so I then decided to look for an app that was easy to follow and that’s when I found fatsecret.🤗🤗x
MFP uses (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) NEAT calculations to determine your calories - you need to factor in the calories you burn whilst exercising.
Thanks I’ll have a look at that!🤗
Yes and that can be a problem as it's difficult to get an accurate measure of how many calories you burn with exercise.
My main concern is about people eating enough so they don't put themselves under too much pressure and pack it in. If you're using the NHS 12 week plan, you need to get your calorie guide from the NHS BMI calculator. It's just unfortunate that the plan mentions 1400 for women and 1900 for men: these figures are generic and suit very few of us. It would be best if they highlighted their own calculator.
I use a wheelchair most of the time so my calorie expenditure is very low and I don't rely on any average calculations sa they don't fit me. That's the problem with any averages - we're not average. I think it's important to check your calorie in and out especially if you only have the wiggle room of 200 cals a day to lose weight. Finding what works for you is best
I use MyFitnessPal - the free version - and am very happy with it. Easy to use.
I use MyFitnessPal it works for me but find something that works for you!!! Good luck!
I keep pondering over getting the paid version but the forums don't say you get much more for your money. It works for me so far
Hi Lorraine41 and welcome. If you decide to count calories download My Fitness Pal it will do the counting for you, I use the calories recommended by the NHS Bmi site as the fitness pal ones are on the low side. There's loads of options and fantastic help and advice here. Best of luck
I used my Fitbit app to count calories
I don't have the discipline to count calories but the app I use estimates your 'daily calorie deficit' based on how much weight you are losing.
It gives you a little feedback everyday and, after a while, you come to know how many calories you are eating instinctively without counting.
