Grossly overestimated calories used

Well, I downloaded the app and I was going to join and do the 12-week plan. However, I've decided now not to bother and I've deleted the app. The reason? I was allocated 1400 calories a day to lose a "healthy weight of 1lb to 2lbs a week".

This is ridiculous. I use the Samsung Health app on my phone to track my activity and my average daily calorie burn is less than 1500 calories, sometimes even less than the 1400 if I haven't exercised. How on earth am I supposed to lose weight on 1400 calories when I barely even burn that amount each day? I'm 58 years old, 4' 11.5" tall and walk 3 miles a day.

I struggle to lose weight even on the "magic number" of 1200 a day, so I've completely lost faith in the NHS's app or diet plan now.

Please remember there is no such thing as a "one size fits all" diet, I'm living proof of that! :-(

Hello and welcome, bollinberbabe :)

You're quite right, one size doesn't fit all and the 1400 figure you see is generic and suits very few of us. You will get a calorie range appropriate for you from the NHS BMI calculator nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-we... It does say this somewhere in the plan: it's just unfortunate that the 1400/1900 stands out as something to work with.

It's possible that, by trying to lose weight on 1200 calories, you have slowed your metabolism. I suggest you read these two posts before deciding on your next move

The forum is a busy place. You will have received a welcome message which includes a link to our Pinned Posts. Do take a look at them, particularly the Welcome Newbies post.

I suggest you do some exploring, read and ask questions, encourage others and see how you get on. The Daily Diary is a great place for meal planning and sharing ideas, and the weekly weigh ins are great for ongoing support :)

Thanks for your reply. I've done the BMI checker thingy and its response is:

Recommended daily calorie intake:

1398 - 1797 kcal

To lose 1-2lbs a week stick to the lower end of the range.

Here is the daily calorie burn for the last seven days, according to my Samsung Health app and my Galaxy watch fitness app. These totals include my exercise (minutes shown in brackets:

1463 (52)

1475 (57)

1482 (58)

1516 (84)

1355 (15)

1526 (70)

1477 (60)

This is a daily average of 1470 calories. Even eating the bottom of the recommended allowance (1398) would mean a daily deficit of 72 calories - nowhere near enough to lose even 1lb a week (which requires a 500 calorie deficit).

I have three stone to lose, so it would take me years and years to do it, bearing in mind I am already 58 and post-menopausal (hence the low metabolism). It would just not work, so the advice I have been given is totally inappropriate.

I’m sorry you feel that Bridgegirl’s response is inappropriate, please remember we are all volunteers trying our best to help and support each other. I find your reply somewhat rude and uncalled for.

As Admins we speak from our own, personal experience as do all our members, we are not professionals and do not work for the NHS.

However, I have found that I lost weight slowly but steadily on the lower end of the NHS BMI target, and kept the weigh off, without feeling deprived or hungry. Furthermore, most of what I have researched states that it is virtually impossible to track how many calories you have actually burnt unless you are in a very high-tech “calorimeter” en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal...

Sorry, you misunderstand me. I wasn't referring to Bridgegirl's response; I was referring the advice from the NHS weight loss web site, which advised me to eat a number of calories which would mean it would take me 6 years to lose 3 stone - hence the advice being inappropriate.

However, this web site/forum is obviously not suitable for me, so I'll just delete my account and find somewhere more appropriate for my age/height/weight/fitness level.

Apologies if anyone was offended by my genuine confusion.
