Would like to lose two stone_ for a start!

I have had some emotional upheavals recently and neglected my weight loss regime.

I think losing weight would give a much needed boost to my self esteem. I know I would feel much more agile too. Two stone would be about the right amount for me to lose as more than that and I would start to look older in my face,I think.

What is a good exercise for a fit 70 yr old. I have a static bike that I use occasionally?

Weight loss is far more about eating correctly than exercise, Orchidblossom. Having said that, exercise is important for good health and the best type is that which you will keep up. Walking is excellent.

Thanks very much for your advice. How many steps for a person of 70?

I don't think it's really that important to count steps. It's better to move often, so if you get up and walk for 10 mins, every hour, that will keep you mobile and help prevent sticky joints.

Hi, Hidden , Welcome.

I am 70, and I walk about 5,500 steps a day - or 30 or 35 km a week.

But I was disabled for five years, and I have been building up my fitness gradually for about eight months.

You can think of daily or weekly distances or steps - whatever fits in with your schedule.

Have you tried Intermittent Fasting? See:

Hi ,no I haven't . Not sure it would suit me -I prefer to have 3 small meals as I suffer with reflux.

I used to suffer with acid reflux, until I reduced my carb intake. It can also be a sign of low stomach acid and apple cider vinegar, taken in water, before meals can help.

Nordic Walking which is walking with poles. Great exercise

I would join a walking group . Have a chat whilst you walk . Local library would have contacts or maybe your GP surgery has leaflets . It isn't great to exercise alone .

Watch portion sizes and what you eat . Like others have advised ....it is mainly the food you eat but walking or swimming with a group ...could try aqua fit at local pool would be a start and whilst you were in that pool the fridge would be nowhere near !

I had same problem but now I have shed a considerable amount I want to exercise more . I love group Zumba classes but couldn't do them easily as my knees were bad . Now I leap around like crazy . My knee pain has gone .

Thanks . Its a great idea to join a walking group -I cant run any more at 70. I will have a look in the library.

See if there's a U3A group in your area. They will probably have walking groups and other interest groups.

Wow, if you're the potentially fit 70 year old in the photo, I'm seriously impressed!

The exercise bike is great for heart rate but also swift walking is one of the best all-round, low-impact forms of exercise you can do, and it gets the pheromones going to so it's great for lifting the spirits. Personally, I believe that it's really important to choose the right environment in which to walk: too remote and I'm a wee bit nervous, but nor do you want to be trotting by a road-side with 'Vrooom, vrooom' going on all the while past your earholes.

Have you a pleasant place near which is reasonably well populated, and if possible with a nice even surface to walk on, so you're not looking down all the time? I used to walk on the cliffs above Dover, and the air was like wine (except above the ferry terminal!) but I was all the time looking for tussocks of grass or rabbit holes not to fall down, so the view was sometimes a bit lost on me!

Swift walking to music makes an enormous difference to your fitness, though you may want to start slowly at first. Walking with a friend is good provided they are not natterers, especially the ones that stop every time they want to make a point!

Walking may not be very original or sophisticated but it really effects magic if you can find time and energy for sessions two to three times a week!

Good luck, and may your exercise bring not only fitness but an increased sense of well-being and happiness. love Betty x

Thank you very much. Yes thats me in the picture.

Plenty of good advice there .Im a keen gardener too, so you exercise and dont notice you are doing it when gardening. You can also grow some of your own fruit and veg .

Thanks for all your support.

Ah, but I'm sure there are many benefits of being in central Portugal to offset the moody internet :)
