Dear Rosemildred,

Don’t be hard on yourself, having a driving hunger for carbs is part of the prediabetic condition, it is not your fault. You have recognised the problem and are trying really hard. Some members of the forum have had success in controlling their hunger by increasing the natural fats in their diet such as Greek yogurt, you could give this a try. Good luck.

Oh dear! For starters stop worrying (yeah easier said than done!) A lot depends on what sort of carbs you can't keep away from. Are you trying to do LCHF? I've no idea what research and advice you've already had so it's hard to offer advice (and there are many more expert and experienced people around than me). If you haven't already seen it try this post from moreless about her low carb journey as a starter for 10:

Hi and welcome, rosemildred :)

Carbs are little demons for getting us hooked, but the good news is, that if you can get past the first few days, then the cravings do subside, making it easier to steer clear of them. Why not have a look at the LCHF forum, where there are others doing the very same? :) healthunlocked.com/lchf-diet

I understand you're feeling the downside of needing to change your diet and right now it all seems about what you can't have. How about thinking about all the things you can have? Meat, fish, veg, fruit, eggs, cheese, nuts, butter, olive oil, full fat milk, cream and yoghurt. What gorgeous meals you can make from that lot!

Pick yourself up, join a weigh in on the day that suits you best and you'll become part of a supportive team. Remind yourself what you have to gain, why you need to do this, and what great food you can have along the way :)

Go for a nice stroll and have a think

Sometimes sitting down with pen and paper can help you get out of a funk.

Come up with a plan

You can do this... One small change at a time

Thanks for the link. I'm a bit puzzled by the last few entries which show various steamed veg having a high insulin index. Do you know why that is?

Thanks. I still don't understand why steamed cauliflower would have a higher insulin index than steamed carrots. The complexity of all these factors to be taken into account can be overwhelming.

Hi rosemildred. As a chocoholic and mad baker, I know where you are coming from. Refined carbs are so addictive. In the past I have managed to lose the urge to eat sugar by going cold turkey for a few days ( it was hard but worth it). Beware, it only takes one sugary mouthful to trigger cravings again. I have managed to keep off sugary things for months at a time, but unfortunately have fallen off the wagon again. Hence my renewed efforts to get healthy. I'm going to plan a few days healthy low carb meals and clear out the naughty stuff in my cupboards, then do some distracting activities like going out walking and doing my hours of art homework. I'm hopeful that I will lose the cravings again as I know it can be done. Good luck!

Not what you're looking for?
