Worried

I’ve just been diagnosed with renal strain. I’ve tried to lose weight over the years but it hasn’t worked. I really want to get healthy - I lead a sedentary life driving ten miles to work and sitting most of the day. Never seem to have time.... I need to break out of this and need help to do so. I need to lose five stone which seems a massive task and I’d be grateful for tips and advice

Hi and welcome Brie23 please note none of us on here are medically trained - however we are all trying to lose or maintain our weight and support each other along the way :)

I would suggest you have a good look at the NHS 12 week plan as it is a great place to start and is a healthy life style change rather than a diet and lots of us follow it on here and have lost weight :)

I'd like to invite you to join our Newbie Club, which we hope will be a good place for you to connect with members, who are also just starting out, or restarting. If you just post a few words to introduce yourself and respond to others there, you'll soon break the ice. Here's the link

You'll find all the information you need to navigate the forum in the header, so please take the time to read it carefully.

Wishing you all the best :)

Welcome Brie23 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis... is it something that can be managed?

Cracker has already given you a great place to start. The NHS 12 week plan, coupled with this forum, is what helped turn my life around after a couple of decades of trying.

All the best.

Hello Brie23, for me it was about making small changes. I followed the Slimming World plan and introduced exercise slowly. It has made a big difference with a five stone loss. I also lead a very busy life but I decided there needed to be time to look after myself. It is a right! I take time to plan my meals, cook and exercise. Not easy but I see it as an essential now. There is no magic bullet. You have to make a change but it does become a habit. Good luck!

Hello Brie23 and welcome.

I agree with kesmcg : take small steps and prepare for slow but permanent changes - maybe not as fast as you'd like, but taking time allows you to change your habits and even your tastes. It can be enjoyable trying new dishes and new ingredients. Shelve the big number for the moment and set yourself a mini-target and before you know it you'll be on your way.

Re exercise, I'm definitely not the one to comment but I've seen other people on here with sedentary jobs suggest small steps - I'm sure you've heard them before - like taking a couple of minutes each hour to walk round the office, parking further away etc. and if you could add in a bit of walking at the weekends, it would all add up to more than you're doing at present

Good luck :)
