Really Struggling

Dear All,

My name is Kevin and I live in Ireland. I am 5 ft 10 and 12 st 2 and 44 years old. I used to be nearly 15 St a few years ago. I am stalled trying to get to my target weight of 11 st 7 and stay there. I have reached it a couple of times but always seem to slip back to just over 12 st. My main problem is the weekends, I binge. I used to say, "OK you can eat what you want on a Saturday night" but that have spread to a Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. I am fine when I am working during the week. My calorie in take is usually on the money. I play hockey and football so I work out about 3 times a week. I just need to get my head right at the weekends. I am using food as a reward and I just need to try and snap out of it.

Would appreciate your thoughts and support.

Regards,

Kevin

Hello and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum KevinBermingham

Very well done on losing almost 3 stone, and keeping it off. That is a fabulous achievement and should be applauded 😊👏😊.

You are not alone in struggling to lose those last few pesky pounds. Why is 11st 7lbs so important to you? You are fit and well, and within the healthy range for your height. I suspect it’s more the fear of re-gaining weight, and the feeling of losing control at weekends. Have you tried a period of planned maintenance, upping the calories gradually, and therefore losing the feeling of deprivation from strict calorie control? The biggest cause of weight loss failure is reducing calories too far and then losing control, a natural side effect of the bodies starvation.

For more detailed advice and support on calories and meal planning please see the Daily Diary.

I'd like to invite you to join our Newbie Club, which we hope will be a good place for you to connect with members, who are also just starting out. If you just post a few words to introduce yourself and respond to others there, you'll soon break the ice. Here's the link

What do you binge on? I have a cycle of things that I tend to return to again and again. But slowly I've found replacements and now an evening in on my own doesn't have to be an immediate excuse to revert to all the old favourites. I would say make an honest list of all the things you really like and then make it easy to pick healthier replacements. Tackle one thing at a time, e.g. crisps, alcohol, takeaways etc. Keep lots of healthy options in the house - in the freezer or similar - and keep temptations as far out of reach as possible. For some people this means having no *insert craving item* in the house at all.

Also just plan other things to do. Take a train to somewhere scenic and go for a good long walk. Meet up with friends for some delicious but healthy food instead. Plan a healthy friday night dinner - start the wknd as you mean to go on. Come on here and tell us your plans day by day. You can totally do it.

Hi Kevin, yes its hard when the weekend comes as we feel we deserve some treats after our good week. But maybe think no binge on Friday as you are still in the week:) Saturday what would you eat, takeaway? Maybe buy something from the supermarket instead thats a little naughty but with less calories. Sunday, try the old roast and lots and lots of vegetables which will start your week. Good luck with your journey and keep writing about how you are going:) :)

Sorry to hear about your struggle. I do non food reward like a pedicure or hot bath with facial when I do good. I do however need to stop rewarding my child with food or she will learn my bad habits. Good luck!
