Newbie... Falling over myself to lose weight

Well I'm typing this one-handed after breaking my shoulder tripping up a kerbstone whist on holiday in Milan.

It's not the first time I've fallen over. Earlier in the year I tripped up a paving slab and had black eyes and sprained wrists. A couple of years before I slipped on a greasy puddle on a cross channel ferry and snapped my quadriceps tendon. Now this. I'm getting a reputation.

Folk are suggesting that I have a balance problem, maybe I've got osteoporosis? But the problem is neither of these. I weigh in at just under 18 stone and on a 5ft4" frame that's a lot of body and once it starts to topple the momentum is too much and over i go. The impact is of course huge, so whichever joint hits the deck first breaks. The recent fall in Italy wasn't helped by my 24lb ruck sack.... my kids thought I was being adventurous at my age trying to do the Grand Tour by train as a back-packer. I think they may have been right.

Although large, I'm normally very active - I spent the summer cycling and kayaking. Apparently it's going to take 6-12 months for this injury to heal no cycling or kayaking for now. I'm very limited in cardio activity with my arm strapped to my body fir the next 10 weeks - making me very unbalanced and to be honest scared stiff I'll trip on fallen leaves/slippery pavements. With none of my usual exercise options or even walking available to me I'm stuck at home and scared that i'll start piling on more weight and getting less and less fit.

I've decided to use this NHS diet as the basis for getting my weight under control. I know that I cannot afford any more falls and I really want to get myself back in shape and n control of my body. I'm aiming to shift a few stone between now and the end of the year so that when the brace comes off I can really start the physio and re-building in earnest.

My kids are all now away at uni - its just me and my partner so we only have ourselves to please. He's having to do all the food prep so I wanted a simple, non-faddy diet based on normal eating. I hate being hungry so I know dieting will be hard. I need to eat smaller portions of filling, nutritious foods to help me lose weight an heal my bones.

Any tips or advice on how to succeed with this diet?

Best wishes

Jill x

Hello and welcome StokerJill 😊

What a fabulous photo, and what an adventure, backpacking around Europe! I loved Milan, I hope the accident didn’t totally spoil your trip?

As you will soon learn, losing weight is about eating less calories than you actually need but not too low, or your body will cling to fat. I was amazed to lose weight eating as much as I did, and that is what made all the difference this time. 😊

Have a good look around the forum, read all the information in the Newbie Club and please ask if you have any questions.

Best wishes

Anna
