Hello all, I am new here. I am male and 51 years old. Looking for some encouragement and tips

Hello all,

I am new here. I am male and 51 years old. I have struggled with my weight since I was about 8. I am 5 feet nine inches.

At my heaviest a couple of years back I was 16 and a half stone. I managed to get down to just over 14 stone at the end of this July and was happy with the progress I was making.

Then I had a holiday in August and put on a couple of pounds and then for some reason when I got back home instead of getting back on the diet I just started eating rubbish again. I am ashamed to say and I have put on 10 lbs in 10 weeks. So currently I am at 14 stone 10 lbs (26 lbs) I am so disappointed in myself.

I am looking for some encouragement and trying to understand why I let myself slip back. Any tips on keeping focused would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome, rabbit :)

Don't be too hard on yourself, you haven't done anything worse than a lot of us have. It's important to look on this as a lifestyle change and not a diet. There is no end to this, it's for life! We have to keep our eye on the ball, all the time.

It's also important to note that some foods just encourage you to keep eating them, so it's advisable to either consume them with caution, or avoid them altogether.

I'd like to invite you to join our Newbie Club, which we hope will be a good place for you to connect with members, who are also just starting out. If you just post a few words to introduce yourself and respond to others there, you'll soon break the ice. Here's the link

You'll find all the information you need to navigate the forum in the header, so please take the time to read it carefully.

Wishing you all the best :)

well, rabbit01, I suggest the first thing is to stop beating yourself up for it and try again! I spent most of my time beating myself up for falling off the wagon so to speak that I hardly had time to pick myself up again. so here I am picking myself up again for about the 50th time. I just turned 51 and I weigh 262 pounds (I am American so have no idea how much that is in stone but it is a lot in pounds!). I am trying to change one thing every 2 weeks to see how that works. right now I am eating less butter and more veggies and feeling better already. I gave up alcohol about 3 months ago and that helped. I am sorry to hear about your kidney issues, I have a best friend who has about 35% of her kidney function. it is a tough row to hoe but you can do this! you have started off terrific and being here is another great start. I suggest reading posts, posting and staying here for encouragement and thoughts on what to do next. Chin up! it will work!

Thanks for your advice and encouragement. 1 stone is 14 pounds which is a measurement we have in common with you cousins across the pond. So in US and UK pounds I am 206 pounds in total.

That is a good idea about trying to change one thing every two weeks. I have not thought about that. The more I think about that the more I like it. I guess I would have to be careful to make sure I don't substitute chips for cookies or candy but I like the idea. I also like the advice that moreorless gave me about thinking of it as a lifestyle change rather than a diet.

Since being diagnosed with kidney problems I have made some other changes which I have stuck to such as quitting smoking and significantly cutting down on alcohol. I have also increased exercise this year so healthy eating is the next one I want to get control of.
