Not going on a Diet

Hi All

I am 51, 5'6", 15st 6lb, BMI 35. I have high blood pressure, I am unfit and I drink to much.

Aims

Initial Target Weight 13st

Improve overall fitness

Initially Stop drinking any alcohol for a couple of months.

Eat healthy food. (luckily, I am not one for sweet and cake)

I want to try doing this by changing my life-style and not by going on a strict diet as they simply don't work.

I have decided to use this forum to post my progress rather than social media, so friends wont see my progress written down but hopefully see any physical changes in me in person, well lets hope so.

I hope I can pick up some support on my journey.

Thanks

John.

I can be your non drinking buddy. I stopped drinking as of today and it will be hard. Gotta start somewhere. Good luck to you on your journey!

You're doing well with your weight loss Melhall and I wish you well with your stopping drinking.

I stopped drinking a couple of months into my weight loss journey and the benefits have helped change my life immensely. If you're interested, I posted a thread on here called 'look mum, no alcohol'. A quick search will find it.

For me, finding a substitute drink with little or no calories was key, so that I could carry on drinking socially.

Hi Tiggerr . What substitute drink did you come up with? Interested in any suggestions for alternatives to wine and G&T (not in the one glass!)

Hi ArgyllGirl I drink large glasses or pints of diet tonic and angostura bitters. It's really refreshing, you can drink loads of it and it doesn't become sickly like some drinks do plus it's a bit of a diuretic so if you really need to keep up with your friends you don't get so full in the long term :)

We have a sodastream, so the diet tonic side has been a bit cheaper than buying it in bulk ready made.

Thanks Tiggerr . Never tasted angostura bitters, but will give it a try!

Thank you I will check it out.

Welcome John,

I think most people here would agree with you about choosing a healthy lifestyle over a diet.

Changing your eating and drinking habits simultaneously are two large steps and I wish you well on your journey.

Hi and welcome NotonaDiet well you have certainly come to the right place for support :)

I'd like to invite you to join our Newbie Club, which we hope will be a good place for you to connect with members, who are also just starting out. If you just post a few words to introduce yourself and respond to others there, you'll soon break the ice. Here's the link

Hi NotonaDiet welcome aboard. Changing diet and lifestyle is the way to success. I had my first drink on Saturday after not having had a drink for 6 months. I gave up alcohol as I was really stressed and didn't want to get into the habit of using it to make me feel better or worse still drinking and then telling people what I actually really did think about them. I had a half bottle of wine with a meal then on Saturday I am going to a gin festival but after that I plan to give it up again. I have to say that I don't really miss it, I drink soda water and lime when I am out and enjoy myself just as much.

Keep posting and let us know how you are getting on. Dipper

There's no doubt that stopping drinking is a huge help to losing weight. So completing Septemperance and/or Stoptober is a good idea. It is not something that I want to do, as bad as that sounds, but I have always liked a few beers. However, I have cut out all booze Monday to Friday and swapped to light lager which helps. Although I have to admit my weight loss would be quicker without. Good luck with it. James
