Having lost 18 pounds last year I now find myself nearly back to square 1. I know this is related to comfort eating as my mum is seriously ill.

How can I change my relationship with food? Putting the weight back on isnt helping me

Hi AJC1957 and welcomeSorry to hear your mum is poorly, I learnt to comfort eat when I lost my mum, so I have empathy it's a hard cycle to be in.

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI (can be found in the pinned Newbie post) to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for 😊

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate 😊

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support - which is great to get ideas of what other people are eating and I have to confess to nicking some of their menu's :) and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too 😊

Cheering you to success to reach your goals 🎉🎉🎉

I don't have any experience with comfort eating - mine is boredom, so I try to distract myself- go out for a walk, read a book etc. Also the unhealthy snacks (me its crisps because I really have to be in the mood for anything sweet, but crisps, well need I say any more???), I don't buy so if I want to snack I have to get up to go to the local shop which puts me off. Its a lot easier for me because it's just me and I have no children so have no unhealthy snacks permanently in the house. Hope your mam gets better-

It can happen so easily, I am a carer for my 30 year old mentally handicapped son and we have to stay in a lot as he hates going out, food has always been a way to do something nice in a day but now I'm getting my mind round to creating healthier meals, still the same as I cooked and loved before but make them the skinny version, less butter and oil, using frylight spray oil and less of a huge portion of food, using a smaller plate really does trick the mind into thinking you've had a very full meal, am loving the "Go" bars they are only 111 calories but are sweet, chewy and satisfying to eat when that sweet urge hits, so for me it is eat the food you like but change them a bit to make them less calorific in total, stick loads of veg and pulses on the plate (I'm a veggie) and less of the main part of the meal which I always used to have 2/3 portion size of now I have the smaller portion but make up the difference with the lower calorie stuff, I still feel full up so it does help, good luck to you to :-)
