Hey I'm 29 and an overweight. I have been for as far as I can remember. I'm not tall and my fat seems to be around my tummy, bum butt and thighs. I'm now 14 stone. It seems every year I gain a stone and this isn't how I want to be. I'm a gym sinner I join don't go cancel membership and repeat this every 6 months?
So my latest idea was swimming every morning I have been once. Help me

Maybe you are making a similar mistake to what I used to make. When I first joined here I was not losing any weight and when I mentioned this on here I was asked how many calories a day I was eating. When I told this person I was only eating around 1000 Cals a day I was told that this was my mistake. I had to check how many calories I should be having on the NHS bmi calculator as this was the only site that gives us the personal amounts we should eat between to be able to lose weight. All the other sites tend to give average amounts that are the same amounts they give to everyone. If you eat less amounts than the personal amounts given to us by the NHS bmi calculator our body thinks that we are starving it and to ensure it can continue our bodies turn everything we do eat into body fat and this weighs more than eating the extra calories does so it stops you from losing weight and sometimes puts weight on instead. Please make sure you don't also make this same mistake. Good luck with your journey.
Hi, I wouldn't worry too much about exercise yet. I would start a sustainable eating plan where you get enough calories to lose weight and yet not feel like you are starving. 🤞
Swimming every morning is quite a commitment. How about smaller, more doable changes so exercise becomes a routine. For example, go for a ten minute brisk walk. I started small and now exercise at least half an hour a day. Small changes add up! Good luck!
I did the same. I also started with being active: mopping and vacuuming eith attitude. I also walked up and down i. My house. Carrying and fetching. This was not an easy change.
Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of the forum. Please note if you are using the new HU App many of these features are not available so I suggest you use the full website version.
The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you. Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news
Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate
The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, as well as a new Daily Diary, if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page. And if you just want to chat, to say hello or share any news or struggles then look out for What's Happening Today thread.
You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too. If you have any questions please just ask
Thank you everyone for your replies. I know a big part of weight loss is my diet. I eat crisps almost every day and when I get in from work I choose snack choices. Even with fruit in the house I tend to eat crisps or something. My meal planning is crap and I have said this over and over again. I can cook but I just struggle with ideas and planning. This is my struggle
Can you get a couple of food books out of the library and maybe do one or two of the recipes each week. This gives you a planned meal and you can shop specifically for it. It certainly makes it easier if you get home and know what you are cooking.
Thank you. I can do this I know I can I just need the encouragement from groups like this. Much appreciated
I struggle with planning as well, that's why I could have done better. They know what they are talking about. I'm gonna cook for my meals tomorrow. Good luck on your journey.
It might help if you really think about why you want to lose weight. In the past I've mostly been concerned about how I look to others, but this time I want to lose it to keep myself healthy, my thinking has shifted. Never know when we might succeed. Best of luck.
I would say - forget the exercise. For now just focus on food choices. It's pointless stressing out because you 'should' be going to the gym, 'should' be running 5k a day, 'should' be doing yoga/pilates/swimming etc. All that is going to do is increase your emotional eating. Once you've got the eating side sorted and the weight starts falling off try introducing some activity. I think that's why I have always failed. Trying to do too much at once. Some people can do it and some can't. I don't feel guilty about not exercising because I am still learning to look after myself through healthy eating. Hang in there, you'll make it happen
