Hi all, i need a lot of help. I work nights and find when i get up i have no energy to do anything, so i usually just sit all day but that makes me pick at rubbish all day, like choc or biscuits and ive got into the rut of doing it everyday. And i have noticed i put alot of weight on when i started taking medicaction for my under active thyroid. Im also just starting the menopause. Any tips please.

Stuck in a rut
Hello and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum tracey008
Shift work must make things very difficult. Tiredness is a massive cause of sugar cravings, I would try to eat a decent meal when you wake up (do you go to bed after work?) something substantial with protein and fat to help keep you full and stop you feeling deprived 😊 If you could I would also try to get outside for a short while, just 10-15 minutes gentle stroll, daylight is really helpful to mood.
Menopause also causes disruption to our hunger and appetite hormones. Read this for a fuller explanation healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and see why sugar and carbohydrates are causing further cravings.

I forgot to say, if your thyroid is correctly medicated, it shouldn’t make you gain weight, so it may be worth having it checked again. I also learnt recently that the synthetic replacement thyroxine (levothyroxine) should be taken on an empty stomach and with water only, at least an hour before any caffeine or milk ie a cup of Tea.

I developed an underachieve thyroid at the same time that I started the menopause. It was at the same time that I put on a lot of weight. I was a full time carer at the time and on the go during the night so my experience was similar to you. As someone has already said, it is important to make sure you are on the correct level of medication for your underactive thyroid and because of the way you are feeling, it would be worth speaking to your doctor and asking to have your thyroid checked again. I'm on Levothyroxine and in addition to not drinking coffee for an hour after your thyroid medication, I have now been told by the doctor that you should not have a calcium rich food for four hours after taking your medication. If you do any of these things, these foods can interfere with the effectiveness of the thyroid medication. It's really important that you try to eat balanced meals and not snack on the nearest things to hand which tend to be high sugar foods. It took me longer than I would have wished to start sorting myself out and the sooner someone starts to sort themselves out, the less weight they will put on and consequently the less weight they will have to lose. I wish you the very best on your weight loss journey.
Hi and welcome when you have chance on your days of how about doing some batch cooking and freezing then before you go to bed take out what you fancy that day and will be defrosted by time you get up. As for snacking if you don't have it in can't eat it. Have some fruit to hand instead and good luck
