Hello, I feel like I've been in this place so many times. A large part of me is already thinking I'll do well for a few weeks and then I'll drop off. I absolutely loathe where I am though. Finally went for the dreaded health check and realise I'm slowly killing myself and need to take charge. Really wanting to succeed this time. It would be lovely to be part of the support on here, everyone seems to genuinely care. Thanks for reading.

Welcome Cathy244 . I thought the same when I started too, having tried to stick to various diets 'at home' and given up after a couple of weeks. This, to me anyway, IS different. Whenever you feel you need to connect with people who understand you can come here - its amazing. Its been great for me as I havent really told anyone I'm on a diet, and although my husband knows I dont subject him to the day to day struggle of the thing! Thats what this forum is for though! And ideas, motivation, support for the bad days and friendship from people who know. Ive been doing it since November, and I feel totally committed to staying till I've finished the job, which I never have before.

There's a weekly weigh-in group for every day of the week. If you want to do that, then today's weigh-in thread for the Sunday group should be in your news feed, or the events section on the right hand side of your screen. To join, you just 'reply' to the thread, and introduce yourself, your start weight and your goals. There's other challenges to join in with too.

Is there anything that makes you stop trying after a few weeks- boredom, no weight loss etc? Hopefully though the news you got at your health check was not good it well help keep you on track

Hi Cathy244 , the thing is, we all have ups and downs and the key thing is that if you get to the end of the first couple of weeks and you have been doing well, it is easy to think, 'oh, this isn't so bad' and either reward yourself, or simply get complacent and stop trying. Then the weight creeps up again and you feel frustrated. I speak from experience here!

I haven't lost anything like as much weight as others on this forum, but then I am older and am going really slowly deliberately (don't want to look like a starving elephant at the end of it!). The downside is that it is taking me a really long time to get to where I want to get to, so it's vital to keep going despite the slow progress and just not give up!

I think everyone on this forum, even those who have been really successful, would agree that they have good days and bad days, good weeks and bad weeks, and even good months and bad months - but they kept going, wrote it down to experience, and reminded themselves of the progress made since they started.

And, of course, used this forum for support. I wish you success with your journey - you will never regret it!

Welcome to the weight loss forum.

Take a look at the Welcome Newbie post in the Pinned post section at the right hand side or at the bottom if your on a mobile. Have a look at the nhs 12 week plan, many members have had success following this plan. Use the BMI checker to work out your daily calorie allowance.

Below the Pinned posts are the Topics where members share a range of weight related subjects.

Take your measurements at the start together with a photo so you can see the changes on the days the scales don't move.

We have daily weigh ins so why not come along and join us. You can find the weigh ins on the Home page in the Events section on the right. Just click on the post in Events and record your start weight and any loss/gain or maintain for the week.

To get the most of the forum be active, share tips, recipes and experiences. Read some of the posts they are very motivating.

Hi and welcome

I was a yo-yo dieter and have been for many years, I know exactly what you're going through, (wow I'm losing weight to omg no weight loss ok sod it lets eat) it's happened to me more times than I can count. But thanks to this forum I've changed my mind set, I'm not on a diet I'm healthy eating, I don't exercise I walk, swim and cycle for fun, I keep active on the forum, and try to support at least 2 people each day (most days more) this is working for me.

This forum is my help and inspiration, the people are wonderful, friendly and informative, I hope you find it as supportive as I am.

Make sure you have a treat each day as I find if I don't I just end up craving and falling off the diet.

Just what I have found Hidden this forum really helped change my mindset. Now I know I will get to a healthy weight by making healthy food choices and enjoying being more active. It's taking time and I've never got so far before before giving up but because this is for life I'm more relaxed about it.

I have found that it's so much easier now I'm not stressed and worried about hitting goals at a certain point, this forum is the best xx

Try the app 'my fitness pal' it gives you something to do when you are bored. Do not weigh yourself every day it will dishearten you. Since I started weighing once a week I don't lose heart.

This healthy eating thing is a bit like the childhood game of "snakes and ladders"...some days you win and climb up a ladder towards your healthy weight and some days you get tempted or fall back into bad habits and slide down a snake; it has to become a way of life to watch what we eat, especially for those of us who are pre-disposed towards large appetites and a tendency towards comfort eating.

The important thing is to stay "playing the game" and keep that slim and healthy you in sight! You just need more good days than bad ones, plus a little extra exercise, and you will get there!
