Doctors told me i was overweight today.......

I had a bad car accident many many years ago.....

Left with chronic pain in my spine,,, nerve damage.....

Then 3 months ago I moved back to England with my Hubbie, on first day in rented house, my leg gave way walking downstairs, fell bad and broke my foot..... put in a boot at A&E...

I found the NHS 12 week diet plan, seems good BUT BUT BUT... what about exercise.....

IF ANYONE CAN HELP with exercise ideas

I have joined a Nordic walking group and they said they have members with all sorts of problems from back pain, hip replacements knees problems and this excersise is low impact on all joints .

Hello DisabledCat1966 ☺ Welcome to the Forum.

Like cracker says you have had quite a time of it 😕 very well done on starting the 12 week plan, eating is much more important for weight loss than exercise ☺ That doesn't mean it's not important though, especially with injuries to contend with. Have you been to see a physiotherapist? Your GP can refer you or go online and get a self referral.

I had a bad motorbike accident many years ago and now have chronic arthritis and find regular gentle moving essential. I try to walk twice a day for 15-20 minutes, with a stick on bad days, plus some stretching/yoga /pilates and exercise bike. ☺

This has really helped my fitness and energy levels, but getting outside in all weathers really helps my mood ☺ Some days it's just 10 minutes ☺

Best wishes

Anna

Hi Anna, thanks for your advice and I love the Cracker quote...... really made me chuckle, ha ha

Walking can be challenging, but I could push myself and try start soon, say 10mins once a day. Stretching sounds good also, do you go to classes or at home?

My hubbie used to ride large moterbikes, he never had a bad accident but he says they are very bad, sorry for your horrid pain, if you need to talk, I may be able to help (small ideas etc).

Take care

Catherine

Hi DisabledCat1966, that was a blow just after moving house and country! Hope you're settled in now. Weight loss is supposed to be about 80% diet and 20% exercise so you can still make a substantial difference by what you eat. Due to your previous back injury you really need professional advice about what exercise would be safe/advisable. if you ask your GP he/she can refer you to an outpatient physiotherapist who would be able to give you advice specific to your individual needs. Good luck 😀

Hey Fran182716, my GP has referred me to a chronic pain management clinic, hopefully they can help with exercises. The last clinic in Norwich I went to, did show some basic exercises, I would like to get into a warm swimming pool, I enjoy floating and trying to use my limbs but normal pools are too cold and causes servere cramp in legs and arms.

Thanks for your message, it has helped.

Take care

What about swimming?

Cold pools causes severe cramp, but a warm pool I can do exercises in, like a hydro pool..... I will ask to Pain Team when my referral comes through.

Thanks Roseabi

Warm pool exercises sound good. Ordinary swimming pools can be extremely chilly can't they!

Your post has made me curious :) I definitely agree that you should build up to walking further, walking is a fantastic way to get fitter and build strength. But also, how about upper body strength exercises that can be done sitting down? There's a link with some examples - I'm not suggesting you sit on an inflatable ball to do them, btw! But if you could work towards lifting weights (start with small ones, or use a resistance band) your bones will benefit, and you will build up your muscles which may help with weight loss.
