Hi jack

The best exercises for toning stomach muscles would be crunches and plank ( if you're not sure of these look on YouTube). Also walking and running would benefit. To be honest though without a healthy diet you won't see any results at all. So make sure that as well as regular exercise you are giving your body the correct nutrients to allow the muscles to grow.

I don't know about private gyms, but the amazing local authority sports centre here will not let you use the gym without an induction into using the equipment and that shows you what it does. They should also point out to you that it is best to do repetitions with lower weights rather than try to push big weights.

Once you have done your induction you can work out a programme. Remember to include a rest between each set.

As an example, on the abs crunch machine I do 10 crunches with 30 kilo weight, rest 45 seconds then repeat 3 times.

Hi Jack 99, a decent gym should give you a personalised workout plan specifically aimed at your targets. I don't know where you live but if you have "The Gym" near you they will do this for you and there are lots of free classes included in your £16 monthly fee.

As said of of a real food plan NHS to the right of your screen and on the bottom of i-phone will give a meal plan for 12 weeks guide. The gyms should provide programs design to fit your needs. Another great way of trimming is swimming and water exercises which cause reduction on joints and body parts. Best wishes in your fitness.

Sits ups come to mind for me but be prepared to be in pain as you energise muscles which have been dormant for some time. Three sets of 10 as part of a general workout will give you lots of aches and pains around the midriff but if you persevere, they should disappear in a week so that you can keep going. If your gym has a rowing machine that should be good also as it ought to have a variety of workouts you can try out.

Hello Jack,

There’s a myriad of exercises that are beneficial for strengthening the core (all mentioned in the replies above).

However, to allow your abdominal muscles to show in the way that you no doubt want them to, removing the fat that covers them should be your primary concern.

As such, regular cardiovascular exercise (with the twice weekly inclusion of HIIT once you’re fit enough to sustain it) and a diet that’s low in consumption of simple/refined carbohydrate, alongside a daily reduction in calories are the best ways to burn fat from around your stomach.
