It has got to be a combination of the two? Avoid carbs like bread and pasta which bloat the middle, look at exercises that strengthen your core muscles - horse riding, belly dancing, swimming?
Maybe just accept that you will always be a little wider on the waist than you were in your 20's - look at Twiggy - even she is a little broader now than she was, although still very slim. I wish I had a 32" waist - mine (age 61) is 42", although I still have a stone to go. I will settle for a 36" waist!
Hi, we sometimes just have to accept our shape. I'm nearly 60, 5'4" weigh 9st 11lb and my waist is still 34" That is 7" less than it was, but still not small. Sadly, I know I will never get my body back to what it was in my 20's and 30's I want to lose another few pounds still and would love a 32" waist but also am aware I don't want to start looking 'drawn' . I am trying to strengthen my core and hope that will help reduce my waist along with watching the carbs. You need to do what makes you feel happy, but also don't worry too much, the menopause is a difficult enough time anyway.
Thanks Caz, I reckon it was the figures that shocked me, I really do need to do a few back muscle strengthening excercises tho, I'm prob going to try for s few more pounds, try is the word tho
Hip to waist ratio is a guide. It must be affected by basic sleletal shape surely? ...Im now a good BMI 22.5 and I do now have an acceptable hip waist ratio ,BUT that's only because Im quite wide on the hip bones, not due to a small waist 😁
I read somewhere that waist should be half of height, so for a height of 5'4" (same as me) a waist of 32" is exactly half. So I don't think that a waist size of 32" is unhealthy, in fact it's absolutely fine. It's just a matter of preference if you want to develop more core strength etc now, and whether you feel physically able to focus on those sorts of exercises. There are ways of losing inches rather than feeling you have to lose more lbs... For me the biggest difference for reducing my waist came from doing couch to 5k. Would you ever consider doing that?
No, the running thing is not me, I'm on my feet all day, and largely ok with everything, it's this stomach thing that annoys me, obviously if I toned up it would go a bit............then of course you got me thinking about losing a bit more weight!
I blame you Ruth, every now I think maybe just a bit more 😉
We're all different Diana. Also remember I'm 37, bit younger and also less than happy with aspects of my figure that still don't seem 'slim' now I'm a healthy bmi - for me it's hips and thighs rather than waist though. We all have different distributions of weight, different skeletal frames too as elliebath says. Looking ahead I'd be happy to stay here and never put weight back on again but realistically I know that as we get older our figures change in ways we can't control. I would love to think I'll still be a healthy bmi when I reach my 50s especially with everything nature throws at you with the menopause etc... So I'd be careful about comparing yourself to others, remember people are inspired by you too
Thanks for the reality check, I guess we miss our old selves, my waist, gone , a bit!
On the plus side, I'm happy with my skin, hair and general health, and when I think some never got to my age ( things beyond their control), life really is for living!
Yep! Important to be happy within ourselves. And also to remember this is about health really. I'm trying hard to keep this perspective too. Yesterday someone I hadn't seen for ages said I look 'well' nothing in particular, just overall. So it's not about the details at the end of the day, it's the overall picture that really counts
Sorry you are feeling unhappy with your shape 😕 You are doing very well to maintain with everything else you have going on, 😕 Think you need to be kind to yourself 😊
You are quite active and I know you eat healthily, as others have said the figures are guidelines and we are all different shapes 😊
Maybe you could try focussing on the positives? What about healthytanjas positivity challenge? I just did one day as it's been a busy week but it was very interesting 😊
Very best wishes, hope you are feeling a bit happier today 😊
I guess it's just the old single bit that depresses me a bit, and the waist is fixable to a point, I was just being wishful..........on the plus side, I have good health, a loving cat, great friends and a job I enjoy
Diana I started this journey because my waist had hit 32 inches and my weight was 154 pounds which meant if I wanted a frock from H&M I needed to take a size 16 (their 16 is a 31.5" waist so even that was a bit tight). Personally, I didn't want to go there so I thought I'd better lose some weight. When I hit 144 (only 10 pounds lost) my waist was down to 29" (sadly put some back on but it will come off!). I know if I get to my target weight of 137 pounds my waist will be back to 28" (been here too many times to count) and my BMI will be 22.8 (I'm 5'5"). At the moment your BMI is around 24.4 if you lost another 8 pounds your BMI would be 22.8 and I'm sure your waist measurement would respond accordingly. Adding in some exercise can only help. Personally, I'd rather have loose skin around my middle (and believe me I have some of that!) than fat around my internal organs. At the moment I'm being spurred on because I want to buy this dress in a size 'M'...always good to have multiple goals don't you think
"M"posal what a roilar coaster. Single makes thing lonely at times middle age gut is normal. I could not believe when I became Type 1 at 40 and went through "M"at nearly the same time shooting insulin gave me a belly. EXERCISE I find swimming the best year round location same weather. Do walk when weather allows, if you walk all day swimming would be very relaxing and refreshing. You are want to reduce follow all the advice you will get to your goals. Good luck!
