Total noob here.

Hey you guys. I sat in the car today and cried because im so flipping inhappy about my huge bum and the fact that my weight is going to kill me. my knees hurt and several people have made the mistake of talking about my pregnancy (only baby in my belly is some sort of cake remnants) im double the size i should be for my height (about 118kg) and my clothes all look crap.

i have had a serious discussion with my husband about bariatric surgery, (ive previously used orlistat, been on some sort of weight support group thing via the nhs, joined the gym and tried to eat healthily) and he concurs that while he will always love me and find me attractive hes scared for my future health too.

however i really dont want surgery if i can avoid it (if i could even get funding) so im on it. food shopping was a totally depressing affair today, but ive bought lots of healthy stuff i like. I work nightshifts as a hcsw at the local hospital, and i struggle to do this without copious amounts of redbull and assorted goodies. however if i dont buy them i cant take them.

im going to use small plates so i can control my portions (one of my big downfalls) and im going to try to keep at the forefront of my mind the reasons why i want to get to a healthy weight.

1) i want to live

2) i want to walk about with knees that dont feel incredibly achey

3) i rrrrrrreally want to be able to wear my clothes comfortably without having to buy more fatty clothes (im not using the f word meaning to insult or hurt anyone, but i AM fat)

4) id like to be able to rock climb again. Me and hub run a rock climbing company and ive not been able to climb since 4 stone ago

5) i want to feel sexy as hell

6) id like for my old face to re-appear. Its very very round atm and my features are disappearing

7) its just not right and i dont want my kids to think this is any way to live. (i have 4 kids)

i know ive gone on but its my first time on this forum and i wasnt sure how to introduce myself. Im going to go and read other posts so i can then cringe a bit at this post ive just written. will add a photo and stuff to my profile in a bit.

bye x

Hi BBT,

Welcome to the Weight Loss NHS forum. I hope you'll enjoy being part of this community, it's a friendly and supportive place, and I'm sure you'll soon get to know people as you hopefully interact and join in with things. I'd like to point out the Pinned posts area - see the top right-hand-side of the homepage - and in particular would recommend you read the Welcome Newbie post, which moreless has put together. Many of us are following the NHS 12 week plan, and there's a link to that plan in the Welcome newbie post. Definitely worth a look to see if you might like to follow the advice there.

We have a weekly weigh-in too - on Mondays - see the Events section (below the Pinned posts) for details of that. Basically you can join in anytime on Monday that suits you best - so if you prefer the day, or the evening, we'll be there to reply to you!

You've got lots of great goals there, and I would like to wish you success.

Have a great week.

Lowcal :-)

Hi bigbumtoo, and welcome to this forum. You've made a good decision to join us here. It is a very friendly and supportive group of people.

Your motivation is serious business! You have _very_ good reasons for wanting to succeed! And that's why I'm convinced you will be able to do it.

Keep posting!

Hello bigbumtoo

Your posts echoes many of my feelings from a year ago, and it felt like I had this enormous immovable hurdle between me and the life I wanted. I tackled it slowly and sensibly one step at a time, don't try to rush things or achieve everything at once, but tackle the bad habits one by one. 😊

It may seem impossible but the alternative is carrying on as you are.

You can do this, absolutely! Lots of people do, and you have a loving supportive husband to help you 😊 Good luck!

bigbumtoo in reply to IndigoBlue61

Thanks Anna. I appreciate the reply. And youre totally right that i can do this... and i simply cant carry on as i am or im going to end up ill. Im on it! im looking forward in a weird way to these first few months as im so heavy i know i will see a good difference each week in my weight (if i behave) and i will be very motivated by that.

IndigoBlue61 in reply to bigbumtoo

Initially I was advised to try to lose 5% of my body weight, and was assured it would make a real difference to my health, which it did 😊 This is then self perpetuating, and as your fitness improves you will start to change your whole relationship with food 😊 Very best wishes

Hi bigbumtoo , welcome! You've taken the first step and that's the hardest so yeah! Go you! You can do this, one day at a time. The most important thing is calories in is less than calories out. Forgive me if I missed this but do you know what your personalised calorie range is? The NHS links Zest gave above direct you there. Basically don't try and eat too little, especially with your job where I'm sure you need all your strength. The other thing that works for me is that I still eat big meals, I can't do small ones as I feel like I'm missing out and then fall off the bandwagon. I still eat within my calorie allowance, I just pad the meals out with huge amounts low cal veggie. Chopped tomatoes, courgette, cabbage etc., they're my new best friends ;-)

Good luck and let us know how you're doing. I'm sure you'll be changing your account name soon :-)

Yes, the link to the BMI NHS calculator is on this page - see the right-hand-side of the page for the calculator, bigbumtoo :

nhs.uk/Livewell/weight-loss...

Definitely important to eat sufficient for your personal needs.

Thanks Zest , I really should learn where stuff is :-D

Hey! My intake according to the website is 1872-2407and my bmi is 41.9 I'm not great at calorie counting. So that's something I will need to work on. I'm sure there will be an app out there to help with this.

My new name will hopefully be snakehipsgirl

Sarah578 profile image
Sarah578 in reply to bigbumtoo

I love you name idea! I think you should change it now, I'm all about positivity and I'm sure you can snake your hips, even if not as much now as you will be able to soon :-)

My fitness pal is free and really, really helpful, well, I've found it a life saver. You can scan bar codes, put in recipes, copy meals from day to day etc. etc. and you can track your weight and measurements. If you don't fancy that I seem to recall theirs a link somewhere, maybe in the newbie welcome that gives other options? I'm sure someone else can help here.

So much good luck and good wishes, you will do this, one day at a time :-)

Thanks you crowd. I've downloaded that app and included today's food. Tomorrow's input will look better as this morning I was a wreck and did my usual eating of emotions.

Perhaps you're right Sarah578 .... my name atm isn't exactly a very positive one! I'm on my phone which is kinda limiting but I will go on the laptop again tomorrow and see if I can find a better one!

Hi bigbumtoo or should I say snakehipsgirl :) I felt really low a few weeks ago and it was that moment of desperation that mister google pointed me here. I dont think in terms of weight I have changed much for the past 10 days but my waist has definitely reduced! Counting calories has definitely made me very aware of what I am stuffing myself with !! Heres wishing you all the very very best. I have only been here just over a week but I can assure you that this is such a supportive and friendly group!!

bigbumtoo profile image
bigbumtoo in reply to Sharonalex

I really need to root out my tape measure and hey myself a lovely new notebook to keep track of my waist and hips. I like paper versions of things. I know on that fitness pal app you can likely record your stats.... but I will use a notebook

Thankyou for giving support. I really do appreciate it!

Hi bigbumtoo 😀 I love your name and hope that in the not too distant future you will be able to amend this to 'smallerbumtoo' 😂lol

I love your attitude and with that and the help of your lovely sounding family you can achieve your weight loss goals.

You have defiantly come to the right place for motivation and advice. I definitely wouldn't of lost all my weight with out logging on to this forum everyday.

Good luck with everything and remember you've done the hard bit admitting it can't go on .... well done you 👍

Hi you have already done the first step and had so much advice already not much I can add, but you have a hectic life, 4 kids and work as well and I know from experience you spend so much time looking after everyone you forget yourself. Firstly please stop the red bull if you want a little help there is a herbal tea called boost no milk required and you can have it cold or hot I am not saying it will give you the instant caffeine fix but red bull can become addictive as I am sure you already know. Secondly my husband will do anything for a quiet life and whilst I was running round putting weight on he never said anything hence I need to lose a lot too. I have found the 12 week plan brill even after one week you feel the benefit, unfortunately you many need to plan ahead foods for work etc does your hubby need to lose weight too? If so include each other in your weight loss journey, make small attainable goals a week at a time, log your daily calories steps etc on the sheets that come with the weekly 12 week plan info. You have logged your brilliant reasons to lose weight keep posting on the forum YOU CAN DO THIS!👍😊

bigbumtoo profile image
bigbumtoo in reply to Itsbab

Ah thanks for that Itsbab . I will look out for that drink. I'm deffo not buying any more energy juice. I know is awful for me.

My hubby is very fit. He frequently rock climbs and spends days in the mountains so weight isn't an issue for him. We are polar opposites! I think that's why we get on so well :-) however that doesn't mean to say the thought of being able to keep up with him fitness wise isn't a total huge plus to losing the excess I'm carrying xxx

Itsbab profile image
Itsbab

Snap! my husband also has never had weight issues I know there are a couple of people who have recently posted on here and work night shifts I think they could give you some valuable advice on how to cope as I know from my son how night shifts play havoc with the body clock. Good luck, I think you are going to do very well as you already have a good mind set. Bev👍

Wishing you lots of will power and luck, sadly the weight won't fall off overnight ( we all wish that tho!).

Take small manageable steps and take all the advice already given, drink plenty of clear non alcoholic drinks at night, relax and plan your food, you will feel a difference after a few pounds too.

For each 1lb it takes 5lbs off your knees great stuff I say

It looks as if you are on the right track. If you eat within the calorie range given by the NHS bmi checker you should lose weight at a healthy rate and I have found I do not get hungry which would result in lots of snacking. This is a great place for support and do join the Monday weigh in where even if you have a bad week you get lots of encouragement. Good luck 👍

Good morning, This forum will help. When feel fed up or 'down'I read up, get tips, feel inspired. I have fallen off the 'I am doing well' and am pleased with myself stage. Got some advise, taken it on board and I hope to be back on the straight and narrow. I would encourage you to spend sometime reading what other folk have written. You just don't feel alone then. Good luck.

Hi bigbumtoo , welcome to the/our forum, this is the best place to be for friendly advice, encouragement and all your highs and lows. Nobody judges, everyone helps, I personally wish I had found this group years ago.

Good luck with your journey and remember just ask/post everyone is here for you
