Weight loss and exercise. Does it help?

Just been reading this article which is quite interesting. It doesn't undermine the benefits of exercise but reminds us to keep on track by reducing the calories going in, and not to add calories in our daily allowance to compensate for exercise if we want to lose weight.

Really interesting, thank you for sharing 😊

The Key phrase "Every reliable expert I've ever spoken to on weight loss says the most important thing a person can do is to limit calories in a way they like and can sustain, and focus on eating more healthfully."  Sums up how I feel! 😊

Interesting that they also say increasing exercising makes you hungrier, I upped my daily cals by 100 as I was really struggling on 1250 (my supposed BMR) after increasing my exercise and luckily I am still losing 😊

Onwards and downwards 😊

Hi Suzymac,

Thanks for sharing this article.  I've just skim read a bit of it so far, but will have a more thorough read through over the weekend when I've got a bit more time.  However, I wanted to make a comment in terms of saying that I would always advocate doing exercise alongside weight loss, because I'd rather be slim and 'healthy'  than slim and unhealthy, and so the health benefits of the exercise side of things are of paramount importance to me personally - that's why I try my best to keep active, and work on my cardio, strength exercises and so forth.

There are so many research articles advocating the health benefits of exercise.  I do agree wholeheartedly that there can be a danger of assuming you can 'eat more' if you exercise, and I would definitely suggest keeping a reign on that tendency - because exercise can build up a very healthy appetite!

I really love exercising, and especially walking in the fresh air - it's so good for the mind and body.

I just wanted to share those few thoughts, whilst they were in my mind.

I'll look forward to reading the whole article over the weekend.

Hope you're having a great week.  I am wondering what your own views are on the exercise side of things.

Hi Lowcal. I definitely think exercise is very important because of all the proven health benefits reported and mentioned in the article. It just prompted me to think a bit more about what exercise I am doing because I always feel very hungry about an hour after running one of my longer runs and I also kid myself that 'I deserve' a treat when I have run 10 km for three days on the trot. I wonder if I do a bit less on the stress factor of the exercise and just make sure that I'm moving for more hours of the day whether this would make more of a difference to my basal metabolic rate. This article goes along way in explaining why after 10-12 weeks or so gains from exercise plateau.

Really interesting article and makes a lot of sense, thank you for pointing it out.  Having said that as well as the health benefits of exercise a great advantage for me (65 yrs) is to become toned instead of flabby as I lose weight.

Yes MW50 I completely agree. The toning affect of exercise is very important too, along with staying supple and fit.:)

That is a very interesting article, I strongly feel that exercise with a calorie-controlled diet is the best way to lose weight.

The main benefits, I feel, are: improved muscle tone, weight-bearing exercise strengthens bones and helps avoid osteoporosis, improves digestion, makes your skin glow and eyes brighter, mental well-being, a desire to fuel the body properly, improves your energy, increased cardiovascular performance as well as multiple other health benefits, but above all, it can be fun!

definitely they say 30% exercise and 70% for your food you can exercise as much as you want but if you don't watch what you eat then you will never lose the weight
