This is the second week of our challenge. Last week we achieved 3,600 kms, which is fantastic. I'm hoping for more this week as new seafarers come on board the submarine - just watch out for the octopus ๐๐๐
For me the latter part of the week was introducing my daughter to more friends and family so less opportunity for walking. I managed in total 35kms.
That's me lolย Bobbing along at the bottom of the beautiful briny sea because I don't float ย Honest, considering my first career choice sinking not swimming it was an odd career to pick.ย ย I can swim but it takes loads of effort to stay on the surface and I have this habit of inhaling when water touches my face.ย Not good, I always have a giant rubber ring when I go in the sea.
Lol I wish, I think my fat is solid rock around the middle its been there that long.ย I wish I could bob about its so embarrasing having a giant barbie pink bathing ring .... NOT... I love it lol because I turn it into a paddle boat using the rope and just bimble around for ages.ย
Getting out can be, interesting ย ย People just think I am really confident and could not give a .... what anyone thinks.ย Maybe 4 years ago, but it's coming back, I am coming back, time for a new pink barbie giant ring
Voyager is a torture machine called an air bike, it can be a spinner, a bike or a sort of crosstrainer.ย I can only get up to about 30k per hour with my arms on the moving lever things, but now I can spin without holding them and without altering it at 46kmph.ย So only doing 1-2 min max then a 1 min cool down, so never get that far but by golly a few reps of that and your heart get a good work out ย I have no idea how people can do spinning for an hour.
Struggled this morning but just done 30 minutes on my cycle-machine and 15 minutes of stretches๐ Feeling pleased with myself! Take that you 900grsm gain!!!
LotToLose- you commit to doing one of several, options every day for 50 days ย hubby walking 5 k, I don't always manage that but I am doing another option where you do (at least) 30 minutes exercise every day, takes me up to the day before I go on holiday so perfect timing ๐ ย There is a minimum donation of ยฃ5 to register.ย
Thanks Anna, that sounds good, I like that you choose your activity and that the ยฃ5 goes to charity (I think) the website is down at the mo, but I think I will join when it is working again.
I had a slow start to the week, returning from a "walking holiday" I didn't feel like walking any more, but picked back up towards the end of the week.
I walked 92.97km and spent 2h16 minutes on the cross trainer. According to the cross trainer's computer that equates to 50.9km (I believe it calculates like a bike as it has a flywheel...). So that's a total of 131.47km, up by around 2km on last week.
Is it a shiny one? And do all my little rubber duckies get one as well?ย
Changing my routine to get back on track. Where I usually did 2-3x 20-30 minutes on the cross trainer and I want to aim to doing 45 minutes 1-2 times a day. Managed yesterday, about 350 kcal in one session, not bad going I'd say, that's breakfast worked off
We'll see if I manage 2x45 minutes today. So far only had a walk.
They are attached to my ankle, so no one gets lost, they go where I go, we can't afford losing participants!
Even my cat "enjoys" the cross trainer, he will sit on one of the pedals every now and again and every time he does, I'll give it a little push, so funny seeing going up and down, not sure he enjoys it as much as I do...
You're welcome to join me next time - although the next one might be a bit too far away for you...
I spent a long weekend in the lake district (the weekend before all the kids got off school...), lovely walks around there and if you plan well you may even be able to avoid the mountains
I do count steps but only on my phone pedometer so not round-the-house steps and I don't think it's very accurate anyway. That said, I'm in an office all day and I don't walk nearly enough.
Don't be fooled. It was spread over four runs and I am *very* slow : ) I completed c25k on a treadmill and I'm really struggling to make the transition to outside so I have a real admiration for anyone at any stage of the journey - it's really hard sometimes isn't it? Well done for starting!!
78.66 k - almost half of last week's distance. This is because . (I) I increased resistances but reduced distance in the spinning class and (2) I spent the Easter weekend painting ย the kitchen - great fun, definitely a fantastic work out: ย bending, stretching, lifting things but no distance traveled.ย
looking forward to reading everyones accounts this evening.
I'm about to perform a miracle merrymanda! In the interest of fairness, we calculate everyone's steps the same, therefore, abracadabra, your total is..................52.70K's!! You'll need to aim for 55K's this week now!
Good morning aquatic athletes!! This week I got out with my girls in the buggy, everyday come rain or shine so we managed to clock up 73,469 steps which, according to my watch, equates to 58.91kms. I'd quite like to double that this weekโฆ watch this space ๐
Oops, sorry Bluewings, I'm about to do the opposite to you, than I did to merrymanda! I'm afraid, by our calculations, your steps equate to 55.1K's, so sorry about that That still gives you a splendid daily average of 7.86K's
I've got my pom poms out to cheer you and the girls on this week!
I am sure the outings in wet weather should count as triple, LOL!ย Nevertheless, great result this week and good luck on increasing next week, Bluewings!
Hi FizzyLiz, permission to come aboard? Not a great week for me I'm afraid due to injures ๐ 30930 steps. Never mind I'm back on track now! It sounds like things are going great with little miss fizz! ๐๐๐
I've been working out my base-line this week, so not a lot of extra walking. 26.25km over the week.
I forgot my pedometer on thursday, so used my minimum step count again to estimate steps taken that day (it was a day in the office), I also forgot my pedometer for a bit of walking yesterday.
I got the easter clear out bug, and was surprised to see how few steps I took with that - a whole 4 hours on my feet cooking, dishwashing and clearing out 3 hall cupboards added to 100 steps! But I must have burned calories lifting...
52.3 km walked 6km swam not as much swimming as last week and away on holiday this week on Friday so will likely be even less! Have a super week everyone ย
Really good Kms this week anyway, have a great holiday!
Was hoping to average more than 10k per day, which I managed by adding in a couple of cycle rides. 75.51km for me. Hopefully will manage lots of steps this week as it's school holidays!
Had massive problems accessing the site, have been able to read posts but not reply, very frustrating miss you all ๐ Again I get so far then page sticks !!
Still chugging along so hoping will be back soon
Hubby has checked iPad and it's working fine so must be site ???
Oh no! That's what happened to me! It's so frustrating! Have you reported it to the tech team? They need to know about these things, so that they can sort them out, especially as it's a problem specific to you.
I shall keep everything crossed for you to be back with us soon
We missed you Flossie. ย Sorry you weren't able to do any replies. ย Hope it gets better - like moreless ย said, if you report it they will be able to hopefully help sort it out. ย I know they have been back working on glitches again as of today. ย
What an exciting week for the Fizzy Family and little Miss Fizz!
So this week... 52.6km.
Walking: 31.2 km average 4.5km, 0.7km less than last week average.
Cycling: 21.4 km average 3.1km, 2.2km more than last wks average
Total: 52.6km, daily average 7.5km, 0.2 km more than last wks average.
Looking to increase this this week with both walking and cycling. ๐
Well done everyone! X
P.S. loving the challenge and the fact it is weekly, all the push and challenge with less daily commitment. Just a wee thing... next challenge could we go Monday to Sunday please?๐ Fits with weigh in and fitbit.๐๐ saves my simple mind from taking away one Monday and adding another!ย
Asics, I love you! You've done all the maths for me and saved my poor shrivelled brain!
All numbers fab and set to become fabber!
The reason the challenge is on a tuesday, is because my commitment to the monday weigh-in, means I wouldn't be able to devote my time to the challenge and that would make me an unhappy Henrietta
Not only that but we put the site under enough strain on a Monday, with our weigh-ins, heh-heh!ย I think it would fall over completely with this one as well.
Not a good week for me as I think a shark came up and bit my foot or it feels like it anyway so not much walking for me. I only managed 40,743 steps this week. Hoping my foot gets better quickly as I feel like Dory at the moment swimming in circles, but I'll "just keep swimming, just keep swimming" ๐๐ณ๐๐ย
Thanks moreless I have no idea what's happened to it waiting to see Dr as can't get in till nest week. Had some lumps come on the side of my foot by my instep and every bit of pressure is really painful so not much walking/hobbling atm, hopefuLlysfaen get it sorted soon.ย
Thank you its not an emergency so I thought I'd leave it to the Dr's for now just didn't think I'd have to wait this long though. If it's gets any worse I will be straight up there x
The thing is Shortcake, you don't want to leave it to become an emergency and, as far as I'm concerned, if it's stopping you from walking and is as painful as that, it is an emergency!
Good morning everyone - hope those Easter eggs have not been too tempting
Not a good week for me, ย no cycling - work commitments did not allow it, Thursday forgot my fitbit - though I was a volunteer at a charity function in the evening which involved a lot of walking but it was not logged. ย Then disaster struck - I slipped on a staircase and have hurt my knee so very little exercise has happened over the last 3 days. ย It seems to be on the mend so will soon be back to my cycling and walking very soon.
Last weeks figures are 19.01 km which means just a daily average of 2.71km.
Don't feel like I slowed down though really, but instead of walking loads I spent a lot of time in the house cleaning and tidying and also in the garden getting it all ready for spring. Feel knackered, lol.
Well Easter's done and dusted and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did
I bet your family and friends fell in love with our little Miss Fizz instantly FizzyLiz, how could they not?
Well done for your K's too, a daily average of 5K's is very respectable
My scores this week are:
Walking - 76.44K
Cycling - 58.6K
Rowing - 4.96K
Total - 140K's
Average - 20K's
I know that normally we pledge to increase our averages, but whilst I'll always do my best for the challenge, it's very likely that my totals may, in fact, decrease, as I work on my optimum levels of exercise and intensity, for maximum weight loss too. Gosh, that sounds a bit highbrow, which is not like me at all!
You always amaze me, Moreless and I totally understand what you mean about optimising your exercise.ย I gather HIIT training is the way to go for weight loss!
Mine is a DIY job - I just incorporate some 1-minute fast intervals - probably about 3 or 4 in a 20 minute workout and that keeps the heart-rate up to the maximum fat-burning zone, apparently.ย Give it a try and best of luck, Moreless!
Hope we all had a great easter! Well i did improve on last week but not quite the double i promised but will increase next week as im doing the 5x50 challenge so that will help. So this week i did 28.61km walking and 19.90km cycling so a total of 48.51km.
It was a lovely Easter, thank you!ย I am waiting for the site to be back up again and I will join you with the 5x50 challenge.ย It will be interesting to see how it changes our stats!
Exciting times for you all FizzyLiz. Hope Everyone has had a lovely Easter Break. My kms are 24.08. The Octopus picture is very dramatic hope we dont meet this one!
The octopus is scaring me a little too!ย Hope you had a great Easter as well, mine was lovely.ย You had a great week and I hope the next one is even better!
The giant Pacific octopus grows bigger and lives longer than any other octopus species. The size record is held by a specimen that was 30 feet (9.1 meters) across and weighed more than 600 pounds (272 kilograms). Averages are more like 16 feet (5 meters) and 110 lbs (50 kilograms).
They live to be about four years old, with both males and females dying soon after breeding. Females live long enough to tend fastidiously to their eggs, but they do not eat during this months-long brooding period, and usually die soon afterwards.
Giant Pacific octopuses have huge, bulbous heads and are generally reddish-brown in color. Like the other members of the octopus family, though, they use special pigment cells in their skin to change colors and textures, and can blend in with even the most intricately patterned corals, plants, and rocks.
They hunt at night, surviving primarily on shrimp, clams, lobsters, and fish, but have been known to attack and eat sharks as well as birds, using their sharp, beaklike mouths to puncture and tear flesh. They range throughout the temperate waters of the Pacific, from southern California to Alaska, west to the Aleutian Islands and Japan.
Highly intelligent creatures, giant Pacific octopuses have learned to open jars, mimic other octopuses, and solve mazes in lab tests. Their population numbers are unknown, and they do not currently appear on any lists of endangered or vulnerable animals. However, they are sensitive to environmental conditions and may be suffering from high pollution levels in their range.
The giant squid remains largely a mystery to scientists despite being the biggest invertebrate on Earth. The largest of these elusive giants ever found measured 59 feet (18 meters) in length and weighed nearly a ton (900 kilograms).
However, their inhospitable deep-sea habitat has made them uniquely difficult to study, and almost everything scientists know about them is from carcasses that have washed up on beaches or been hauled in by fishermen. Lately, however, the fortunes of scientists studying these elusive creatures have begun to turn. In 2004 researchers in Japan took the first images ever of a live giant squid. And in late 2006, scientists with Japan's National Science Museum caught and brought to the surface a live 24-foot (7-meter) female giant squid.
Giant squid, along with their cousin, the colossal squid, have the largest eyes in the animal kingdom, measuring some 10 inches (25 centimeters) in diameter. These massive organs allow them to detect objects in the lightless depths where most other animals would see nothing.
Like other squid species, they have eight arms and two longer feeding tentacles that help them bring food to their beak-like mouths. Their diet likely consists of fish, shrimp, and other squid, and some suggest they might even attack and eat small whales.
They manoeuvre their massive bodies with fins that seem diminutive for their size. They use their funnel as a propulsion system, drawing water into the mantle, or main part of the body, and forcing it out the back.
Scientists don't know enough about these beasts to say for sure what their range is, but giant squid carcasses have been found in all of the world's oceans.
Hope this morning has found you all in fine fettle (ship shape and Bristol fashion even). ๐
This week I have managed to clock up 49,324 steps (up almost 10,000 on the previous week). I can't pledge to do more, but will try to keep up this number, no access to gym equipment and probably too old to start to start anyway! But walking and dancing and yoga I can do ๐
Anyone seen a mermaid yet? ๐ฃ๐ป Row, row row your boat... Sorry, getting carried away there, can't row under water. Love coral reefs and colourful fishes ๐ ๐ ๐
By the way FizzyLiz, who's in the galley cooking for us as we make our way to the depths? In my day it would have been someone like Gregory Peck, oh well, back to my rocking chair ... ๐๐๐
There seems to be an error Moreless, I can't access Gregory ... Oh well, it's back to Howard Keel (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, my all time favourite film).
Oh yes, lovely thanks Moreless. In 'The Big Country' his face shows character (more succinctly he looks careworn), my kinda man (and to match my kinda face haha) ๐๐
LOL Mouse, you are funny!ย I am sure you are not too old to do whatever you want to do.ย Great to see you managed to increase this week, that is very good as the Easter weekend seems to have scuppered a few of our salty crew!
The eyes of the Colossal squid are larger than that of any other creature on Earth. It is also known as the largest species of squid in the world. It can be up to 46 feet in length. This also classifies it as the largest known invertebrate out there as well.
The ends of the tentacles also feature extremely sharp hooks. They also have a longer mantle than most types of squid out there. The females are much larger in size than the males. They also have a beak that is much larger than any other squid. They are often mistake for the giant squid due to the many similarities. Looking at the size of the beak though is a great way to tell them apart.
Distribution
In the colder waters is where you will find the Colossal Squid. They can be found along Antarctica, New Zealand, and even some areas of Africa. However, the habitat of it is extremely remote which makes it very difficult to observe them in a natural setting.
The tend to live in the deeper regions of these areas too. They are more than 1,000 feet below the surface. Even with advanced types of technology it is hard to observe their natural behaviors there. The offspring though tend to be closer to the surface so their movements are easier to track.
Behaviour
There isnโt much at all known about this type of squid. Therefore it is hard to guess what their actual behaviours are. It is believed that they are loners in the water and that they eat large volumes of food daily.
It is believed that they often fight Sperm Whales when they are going to be eaten by them. This is based on various types of scars on the backs of these whales. The injuries are consistent with the design of the hooks on the tentacles of the squid.
ย
Diet /Feedingย
Due to their enormous size, the Colossal Squid consumes a big volume of large fish out there. They are very powerful so they donโt have any trouble capturing and consuming these large fish. They are able to chew of chunks that they can swallow and it can take them several minutes to consume one large fish that they have successfully captured.
Reproduction
The Colossal Squid is one of the few species where the males have a penis for reproduction. However, the actual reproduction process has never actually been observed to be certain of what that process entails. Even the courtship of this species of squid isnโt known.
Conservation
The only known predator of the Colossal Squid is the Sperm Whale. This is confirmed due to them being found inside of the stomach linings of these animals. There isnโt much that has to be done though for conservation since they are so hard to find in the water. It is believed that there are plenty of them out there though so their numbers arenโt in jeopardy.
Human interaction
The first Colossal Squid was identified in 1925. It was found in the stomach of a dead Sperm Whale. It wasnโt until 1981 though that one was actually captured alive in a net. The largest one every captured was recorded in 2007. It took place in New Zealand and weighed almost 1,100 pounds.
There seems to be a great deal of respect both from fishermen and researchers when it comes to the Colossal Squid. That is why such care it taken with evaluating it. You will find many of them in museums of natural history in these areas as well. This continues to be a species of squid though with plenty of mystery surrounding it.
I'm loving all the stuff I'm discovering! Who would even think to look up info on squids and octopuses?? This challenge is definitely opening up my field of vision
sounds like a challenge to me - perhaps we could do a space exploration and you could reward us with descriptions of ย the ETs. ย Am working stupid hours at the moment but chortling all day thinking of the bemused squid. Right now am hungry enough to "attack and eat a small whale"..!!
You did great, FizzyLiz and I am sure Little Miss Fizzy won the hearts of your friends and family.
I had a great week, with a good ole mix of everything, totalling up to a respectable 109.68kms.ย Still spending a fair bit of time doing unrecorded exercise like strength training and Pilates.ย Now I have started the C25K, I hope to see an increase in kms, but it may just mean I spend less time on the static bike, so there might even be a drop, darn it.
Experimenting with smileys in the hope they have returned:ย ย
Fantastic LTL! Your K's are still brilliant AND you're doing all the unrecorded exercise!
We're both experimenting with exercise, but you seem to have a complete handle on the balance between cardio/strength and nutrition, which leads to optimum weight loss. I'm desperately trying to emulate you!
To be honest, it is all hopelessly disorganised and I am beginning to feel a bit all over the place with it.ย Sticking to a programme is what I should do, but I haven't really figured it all out.ย
One thing that I do that may help you is High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and that is short bursts of increased speed, whether it is on the bike, the treadmill or crosstrainer.ย Seems to help!
Up until very recently (when I started the C25K), I have done it mainly on the bike and think that has helped.ย I occasionally do it on the cross trainer, but am a bit lazy in that department.ย Hmmm, not tried it on the rowing machine... I wonder....
I don't think I could, really.ย You could do faster walking intervals when out walking, although it might involve that funny bum-waggle that speed walkers do.
Hi all some fab kms bobbing along!! I haven't quite managed to double last weeks total, but did 111.3 (15.9 daily ave) and Ed did 210.1 (30.01 ave) he keeps moaning and groaning about aches and pains but as soon as I say don't go to the gym/for a run etc he rushes out like the hounds of hell are after him ย
Ahoy me hearties. Here's another crew member reporting in with 110.2 km for the week. 25 of that was on my bike yesterday (and don't I feel it today) and 17 km was running. The rest was yomping up French hills. Feel very virtuous this week. Won't be so good next week as I'm now back at work and time is limited. But I hope to pull my weight at the oars of this good ship and make a decent contribution!
OK, I want to be you!ย Up hills, 25k cycle rides, 17, yes 17kms running - I am in awe.ย Feel you about work getting in the way of the fun stuff, but the bills have to be paid!ย I hope it is a good week, even so, especially as we now have longer evenings to go out in.
Aww, thank you! But I'm sure you don't want to be me! You're doing brilliantly yourself. So glad spring is here though. And I'll definitely get my bike out more this year. ย Lots of plans - but how to find the time?
My kms for this week are a total of 52.35kms - that is all steps and walking. ย My gym session was already included in the previous week, but I have been today, so will look forward to including my gym Kms in next week's data.
Really enjoyed reading everyone's posts, and here's to another great Aquatic Adventure this week. ย All those Octupi and Squids - (are they Octupi in plural??? - moreless ย I'm sure you know the answer to that).
I am wondering why I thought it was Octupi - sounds a bit like a collection of tupees (i.e. 8 hair pieces) - glad you could set me straight on that one! ย ย I've learned something new today. ย
lol, I knew that would do it...! ย I can think of other things to say, but I am going to be good and go and do my Strength exercises now... So I'll leave you in peace.... (until the next time....
Never mind Prawncess, some weeks are just difficult, I hope you have a better week next week, especially now it is spring and our days are getting longer.
Hello all! Last week's total is amazing! How many of us are aboard?
How lovely introducing little miss fizz to your friends and family- joyous ๐
I got to meet my niece-in-law's new baby at the weekend, she's tiny and cute.
My total last week on MFP came to 51.49km, (average 7.35km a day) I'm pretty pleased with that... Plus I swam a km which I believe adds 3km to my total ๐
Sorry for the late reply. I thought it would be easier only submitting once a week but unfortunately not. This week my Fitbit stopped working again and so I didn't receive my report. My total steps for the week is 34,533 but I will leave the submarine now if that is ok. Good Luck to everyone else.
Sorry moreless, didn't get a notification that fizzyliz had posted. Didn't receive my weekly Fitbit update either, so have had to calculate it manually ๐
Thanks T1, that's a fab total of 83.98K's and a daily average of 12K's
Hi fellow intrepid underwater travellers! A quieter week for me although not in all respects. It was the last week of my job crossover and of finishing packing for moving house. But all the same one cycle and 2 runs to report and one of the runs was very fast - almost ย a 30mins 5k - 30:05mins! - I'll reach it next time for sure Overall 22.33km for the week. Hope that helps us all to reach some very exciting depths on our underwater adventure
Arrgh, cannot reply, phone keyboard going haywire ๐ can't see what I'm writing, spooky ๐ตsorry late again, I'm not doing well and lost my plot ๐ Anyway, 47.7 km for last week, hope this works, Elissy x
