It's never easy making that first step, for me I was always going to begin 'tomorrow' or 'after the weekend/birthday/holiday'. However once you start and make progress it is easier to focus on why we want to lose weight.

If you keep a log of your weight loss and target,  break it down into manageable targets, maybe 7lb or 1 stone to lose, and if you do have a 'bad day' then draw a line under it and start afresh the next day.  I think we all have them now and again.

For me it is simpler to focus on 1 stone at a time, I joined an online weight loss club and they have masses of gentle exercises that can be done in the home, lots of recipes and encouragement.

Good luck

Hi Mrsblob73,

Welcome to the forum, and I'd like to give you the link to our Welcome Newbie post, which a lovely member called Moreless has put together:

healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Please join in anything you like the look of in the forum, there are lots of things going on, and there's a weekly weigh-in group too, if you fancy the idea of weigh-in in as part of a supportive group.

Many of us are following the NHS 12 week plan, as it's a good structure and full of useful advice.  There is a link to that plan in the Welcome Newbie pack, or via the icon above (labelled Weight Loss NHS).

Hope you have a great week and look forward to seeing you out and about in the forum.

Lowcal :-)

I'm a great believer in getting your head in the right place and the rest will follow.  The fact that you've joined the forum means you're serious about losing weight and know that you need to.  So that's the first step taken.  We're all in the same boat here, determined to lose weight but unfortunately there is no magic wand - we have to do it ourselves.  But that doesn't mean it has to be a chore.  There are some fantastic low calorie recipes out there that are suitable for the whole family.  There are also loads of diets but please don't go down the 'faddy' diet route as you may lose weight quickly but you'll soon get bored with it and the weight will go back on just as quickly.  As a lady of a certain age I've tried every diet going but have never felt so motivated as I have since joining this forum.  You CAN do it and you will feel so much better when you do, not just physically but mentally too as you'll know you've set yourself up for a healthier life for you and your family.  Good luck!
