I normally have porridge with honey followed by a slice of my home made bread for breakfast. That comes in at a modest 235 calories ,and is still very satisfying.
This morning I had a very small portion of muesli , verified by my husband that it looked quite small . I had it with natural yogurt and z mandarin orange followed by my brown bread. That breakfast was over double my porridge one in calories. 500!!! I weighed the portion of muesli and that alone was 360 calories for a tiny portion.
Btw there was no added sugar in the muesli. Just oats with fruit and nuts.
Whenever I see people getting bowls of cereal in a hotel their portion s are always much bigger. I doubt people realise how calorie dense muesli is. It was a shock to me.
It can be quite surprising to see the calorie content of certain things. Regarding the muesli, it sounds healthy and delicious, but probably sensible to limit the portion size - like you say, people don't realise how much they're having sometimes, and can therefore overeat as a result of that.
I am distracted by your mention of 'home made bread' that you have for breakfast sometimes, do you have a recipe for that? I am very keen to try out recipes for tasty wholemeal bread - what kind do you make, and is it an easy recipe? That's what I'm keen to find, something really tasty and easy to make.
Hope you don't mind my picking out that one item from your post, but I am very interested!
I miss warm bread from the breadmaker I just like plain ordinary, low salt tiny bit of sugar to feed the yeast. I think the breadmaker was the happiest purchase for my hubby ever. I am currently refusing to make any
Dead simple recipe. I'll upload picture and recipe when I can.
You could make your own homemade muesli using oats, seeds and dried fruits, leaving out the dried bananas and nuts which make it so calorific.
As for homemade bread, my partner has hidden the bread-maker my daughter gave me! He knows bread is one of my major weaknesses and is a definite no-no for me.
We do have some supermarket wholewheat/seeded loaves for our visitors, but that has to be limited - I try and substitute wraps and pitta's for sandwiches, and rarely have toast for breakfast, except under a scrambled egg.
Have you tried those little Banana Oat pancakes for breakfast - they are yummy! Mix 1 egg, 1 mashed banana and 30g oats - fry both sides in a non-stick pan - serve with fruit and yogurt or maple syrup (small amount)!
I buy a 5kg bag of wheat free muesli base from our health food shop. It's a mixture of porridge and jumbo oats, I think rye flakes and something else.
My eldest son has a nut allergy, so no " normal" muesli, my husband cannot eat any bran, but can eat this. Them I buy toasted oats, malted barley flakes and fruit. Everyone tops their own muesli in the morning 😊 I have mine plain and made with home made kefir and linseeds and / or coarse oatmeal, depending on my mood.
The portion I have works out around 350 calories and keeps me full until lunch 😊
I was always very surprised how small a 'portion' of cereal was. My OH pours himself a bowl every morning, and one day I weighed it for him, it was two portions, 400 calories and 40% of his sugar GDA
