So baby and I have been down with a tummy bug, her with the runs and me throwing up. The only upside to it, I thought, was that sometimes you lose a little weight while down with the gastro. Surprisingly, i managed to gain a pound and a half even though I couldn't keep anything down for 4 days!

Then came an early xmas celebration with the in-laws 2 nights ago: oysters, foie gras, roast & trimmings, cheeses, pavlova & mousse. I gave myself permission to cheat and eat as much as I liked, and that I'd deal with the consequences later

Somehow I've managed to drop a Kg... It was only 24hrs ago!

Weird huh? Anyone else experieced weird fluctuations like that? I always weigh myself at the same time, in same circumstances (i.e before breakfast, on an empty tummy, after using the loo). Anybody else experienced this sort of weirdness?

Hi Jellymummy, sorry to hear you and the baby had tummy bug and hope the little one gets over it quickly. You'd be surprised just how many bugs you can catch from little ones, but that's anther story. :)

The bit that made me smile was "oysters, foie gras, roast & trimmings, cheeses, pavlova & mousse", I'm usually asked, "what sandwich do you want, cheese or ham?" :D

As for the wild fluctuations in weight, yes it happens all the time. Like you I weigh myself at specific times, both morning and evening and sometimes there's no rhyme or reason to it. If you have a look at my profile, you will see I use a graph to track daily weight.

Every time I weigh myself, I place the scales in the same spot on a solid floor and calibrate them before use. It makes no difference. Up and down is very normal, but for the life of me, I don't know why. I suspect it's to do with levels of hydration, after all we are 60% water, so it stands to reason that when we lose or gain weight, most of that weight is water :)

Many moons ago, saunas were popular for weight loss, and they worked. You could lose half a stone easy but within hours that weight would pile back on.

:)

Hi Jm, sorry to hear that you and babe have had dicky tums, that's not a lot of fun. Hope you're both feeling much better now :)

My weight fluctuations are totally weird. I'm not clever enough to keep a graph, like Tewson, but I do weigh myself daily and the numbers go up and down like a yoyo. As long as there's a general downward trend, all's well with the world :)

When we are poorly, and less mobile than usual, our body tissues retain water that we normally drain via our lymphatic system, stimulated by muscle movement (e.g. some folks get swollen ankles when they don't take exercise). That probably explains your initial weight gain. Then the retained water was gradually eliminated over the following days when you were back to normal, so you appeared to lose weight.

That's my guess, anyway...
