Hi,

I'm new to this page so thought I would introduce myself

I'm Iona, I am 22 and started University in Sept 2014. University is were i really started to show my weight going up, I don't really have any excuses apart from my habit just turned to eating as there isn't a lot else to do apart from coursework.

I have -

healthy breakfast - Usually healthy amount of porridge with fruit

Healthy Lunch - Salad/ryvitas/ rice cakes etc

Healthy Dinner - have a wide variety and salad always included

....This is were it all goes wrong....

My snacking!! I still snack my 5 a day fruits then add toast, crisps especially flapjack (which I originally thought was healthier than chocolate bars but no they are a whopping 450 cals approx!!)

Looking forward to meeting people and joining in the weight loss

Iona :)

Welcome, I hope you find what you need in this community. Start by dowloading an app on your phone to keep track of calories (Fat Secret, My Fitness Pal...), it's a great aid! Good luck!

Hi, just noticed your doing biology, I am in first year so biology is involved a lot, very interesting! Are you in first year?

Snacking is awful, I will just snack on something little without even thinking about it. Thanks hopefully for you to :)

Hi Iona welcome to the site, lots of good advice floating around on here and plenty of people to ensure your motivation doesn't wane in the coming weeks.

I notice you haven't mentioned anything about how active you are? Do you exercise at all? Exercise is key for weight loss it is so much easier to lose weight with the addition of exercise, burning those calories is the name of the game.

Your diet by the sound of it doesn't sound too bad at all it is just a case of you cutting out the unhealthy snacks. Yeah flapjacks are the devil in disguise, lots of sugar and fat in there. Try and get into the habit of taking fruit or vegetables to lectures with you, replacing those crisps with carrot sticks might not sound that appealing but it will do wonders for your weight loss and ensure you are getting more fibre. As a rule I try and avoid too much fruit, when I think of my 5 a day I try and make sure I achieve that with vegetables and a little fruit. Fruit is great and better than the average chocolate bar but it does contain a lot of fructose and can be detrimental to weight loss so keep your eye on that.

Keep us posted on how you get on.

Thanks, everyone seems really helpful and all positive together!

I am on my 5th week of NHS Couch to 5k and have two dogs which I have to take out separately. I make sure I do 10,000 steps a day (well try)

*waves* hello there! I'm just finishing off at uni and started my healthy eating/exercise last year :) I'm also a major snacker- I swear the food just creeps into my mouth without me looking ;) I've recently discovered that the sugar free jelly sachets/pots are great for snacking (I tend to make mine up with berries or chunks of fruit in as well) as they are only 9 calories each!

I do Couch to 5K as well- re-doing it this year as I managed to complete it last year and took part in a 5K charity run, but I've lapsed a bit and therefore doing it again! :)
