It takes time. When I started running last year in March I could hardly run a mile without collapsing. Then I did a 10k race in July. Now I run 5 or 10k regularly. The trick is to start very slow and pace yourself. If you need to build stamina do interval training - sprint for 30 seconds, walk or light jog for 1 minute ... repeat. This will help build muscle strength and power.
