As I approach the dreaded half century I am finding it so much harder to drop the pounds!! Years ago it was so easy to lose some weight but now I have to be so focused to lose any, not like the days i could diet and still eat a marsbar and lose!!
Anyone else struggling like this??

Hi Nanashon. How old are you now? Maybe your weight loss problem is affected by your age. You know that as we age, our metabolism slows down due to a number of reasons, the level of physical activity might decrease and our stress levels increase which are a great factor for loosing weight. With regular exercise, good eating habits and if you find a way to control stress, the numbers on the scale might start to budge.
Dawn2501..... 1/2 an hour five days a week, I sometimes break it up into chunks 15mins when I can ect, and combine some running( gentle) nothing to put me off, we just need to move our bodies that's all !!
I know exactly how you feel!!! i turned 50 at the beginning of the year and am also struggling to shift the poundage!! Janetmiller has got it spot on with her reply about the stress, less exercise and metabolism slowing down. Gone are the days of losing a good 3 or 4 pounds in a week if you had been good (and plenty of exercise), i'm lucky if i stick or drop a pound these days when i've been saintly. I've done this so many times and know exactly what i should be doing but putting it into practice these days is another thing. Each day i start off positive then by the end of the day i'm tired and can't be bothered to get off my lazy backside and exercise.
I bit the bullet last year aged 58. Did the 12 week plan and that kick started a total of 11 kilo loss. Combined with exercise - walking, aquafit and this year did couch to 5 k in January followed by a marathon in August I have kept it off.
(except put on a couple of kilos on recent holiday but that is going now.)
Don't let age be a barrier. If you look at the c25k forum there are lots of people much older than you.
Actually, I'm now older than any of the figures mentioned above!
But I do think that as well as the metabolism issue - which JanetMiller mentions - we also change psychologically as we age. Most people become more wary and cynical - perhaps having lost some of their enthusiasm for tackling issues such as weight loss through the knocks and bumps of a longer life.
I do feel that as we age we probably get more entrenched in our habits and perhaps therefore find it harder to make the necessary changes in our lifestyles.
Totally agree with the previous comments. I am 52 year old women and have lost 2 stone since June, basically by walking 6 miles a day to and from work and a bit of bike riding at weekends. I have now come to a plateau and getting a bit disheartened. Glad to hear I am not the only one.
I have read two things lately, changing exercise because your body gets used to the same thing and upping food intake so your body thinks food is in abundance and kick starts your metabolism. So I will try this.
I'm 61 and not as active as I was when I had a young family to run after. I reached my goal weight a few weeks ago and still losing while trying to balance maintenance. I only reached a plateau once, had a refeed day and upped my excercise and started losing again. As we are all individuals its a case of trial and error some of the time, but I got there and so will you. Slow and easy does it...
Hi everyone, well thanks for all the replies, all very interesting!!!!! Basically I just have to try harder..I also start the day off well and struggle by the end of the day, I have also enjoyed walking and the gym but find friends now often cant manage when I can or dont want to buddy me to the gym, Im trying to get up the courage to decide to find a good local gym I will pop to myself!! Walking is good but already the weathers really bad so puts me off!! Good luck to you all, oh and yep I meant to say Im 49. You have all made me feel more positive with the road ahead x
I had exactly your trouble until this summer when I downloaded an app for my phone. The app counts calories, calculates exercise and advises you regarding your nutritional intake. Found it really helpful it highlighted the fact my daily intake was to heavy on carbs. So I cut out carbs at lunch and have lost my desired 10lbs in about 3 months BMA now 22.4 . This loss has been really easy to maintain as well.
