It depends on how much exercise you usually do. If not then best to start walking for a while and gradually build up speed and then move onto c25k.
If you are fairly fit though then c25k is a gentle introduction to running and the forum is great. Make sure you have reasonable running shoes though to avoid injury.
Well done on your weight loss!
Download the podcasts from nhs.uk/Livewell/c25k/Pages/... and don't try to run too quickly. When I started lads walking were passing me - now I pass them.
Start running right now, start whenever you want. If you can walk you can run.
Try going for a walk, maybe take some music, crank up a good song and just go for it, even if you only run for half a song, even if you only run for one minute you will have started and that's the most important thing because then you have something to build on, the next time try to run for a whole song, or two minutes and just increase bit by bit.
No matter how slowly you run, it's better than being sat on the sofa
start running now! I weighed a lot more when I started the couch to 5k programme and I absolutely love it! most important piece of advice is to take things slow, run really slow and if you need to repeat a week or run do it! oh an always have your rest days!
Hi there, I started the couch to 5k last week, and I was hoping to love it however its harder than I thought!!I I have always enjoyed walking however the jogging is hard to get used to!! Did you find that?
the jogging is really hard, every single run, and my muscles sometimes really ache! But just got to week 8 and have run for 28 minutes straight and I feel amazing! Things are starting to click in to place and I feel like I am running without having to think about it! However it is still hard to get to the end of each run, I still run ridiculously slowly (most people could probably walk past me!), oh and I still look like a beetroot for about 5 hours after! I really feel like I have achieved something, so just listen to your body, take your time, go even slower than you think you should and if you need an extra rest day take one! It is all worth it!
Hi Kagari, I was advised by a doctor with an interest in sports physiology to get down to 90kg (198lbs) before I started running. Well done on losing 12lbs so far! I've currently lost 10st, and have another 2st to go. While you're getting down to 198lbs, spend your time doing ankle, knee and hip strengthening and stabilizing exercises. Also work hard on your core muscles. If you belong to a gym, ask a Personal Trainer to show you some good examples. If not, have a search on Google for 'running exercises and stretches'... or browse through the excellent resources on NHS Choices website
You can follow my personal story on bigpictureliving.co.uk Keep going for it!!
U can run anytime...my advice run on a treadmill on 1% incline for few weeks as easier on your joints. Physiology won't hold you back anatomy and joint strain will if your over 200. Just as above try and go slow it's about distance not speed good luck
Well done on losing 12lbs that's great!
I have never run before and decided to try the NHS couch to 5K app, going really well just completed week 4 which is amazing for me as I could hardly breath week 1! Get such a buzz after each session and that's what spurs me on to the next one, I've also lost 8 lb in 4,weeks with the exercise and following 1500 calories sometimes less but sometime a bit more at weekend !
Good luck and give it a go
Yvonne
I tried my first run yesterday from c25k. It was hard but I did it, I keep saying to myself if Im really struggling just walk the next run and repeat the week 1 if I need to,there is no hurry! Just do what you can, even if you have to walk it all and get quicker each time, just keep repeating week 1 till you can do it comfortably.
