We were away at the weekend, went to a wedding in the Midlands, a wonderful occasion based in a beautiful hotel. I was determined to keep control of what I ate. On the way up we stopped at Watford Gap services, and although there's McD's there, there is also a Fresh Food counter. For a snacky lunch (we knew there'd be a substantial meal after the ceremony) I had an egg and cheese salad. Bear that in mind for the future - some motorway services there is nothing healthy at all on sale.
Sunday, the day after, there was a very extensive selection of foods for breakfast. I thought of having a croissant to dip in my coffee but thought 'no'. I had fruit, and yogurt, and sliced cheese and ham. I ate no bread at all yesterday. We detoured to Lichfield, a place I'd never been to and wanted to see. Right in the middle of town there's a Wetherspoon's pub and all their meals are calorie-counted. I had sirloin steak and salad.
We stopped at Watford Gap again and I had a yogurt with fruit and honey. Everyone around us was eating McD's!!! They will never go out of business, but equally, we never go there and never eat any of their offerings.
Had to smile a bit, after the wedding while we were all relaxing with Buck's Fizz. A woman came up to my husband (who was looking extremely smart in a suit and tie, first time I've seen him in a suit or with a tie for at least 10 years!!) And she opened the conversation with 'I think you and I are the oldest people here'. I stayed out of it because I thought 'that's a conversation-stopper, not a starter'. He said 'Well, 1934 was a good vintage year' but hers was sometime in the 1920s. And would you believe, then she started detailing the things she suffers with.
It was a fairly short conversation, you'd better believe it, and fortunately we were called to go outside for the photographs. We were both dressed smartly as a compliment to the happy couple and to the occasion and we avoided that lady for the rest of the day!
I see so many fat people wherever I go and I am determined to keep it under control no matter how old I become.
