Good luck to you! Be strong! (She says...)

Hi there Louise - Thanks for the words of encouragement - and I hope you decide to start it too because unless you try you'll never know - go on give it go - what have you got to lose? (hopefully lots!)

Hi Linda, that's my name too. I lost three stone in six months after watching an amazing BBC Horizon programme that changed my life. It was called "Eat, Fast and Live Longer" vimeo.com/54089463 with Dr Michael Mosley and, at my age, living longer as long as I'm healthy was very attractive!

I went from a size 16, 12 stone 4 pounds, to a size 10, 9 stone 4 pounds, and I now have so much energy I even started running (NHS Couch to 5k podcasts) last January at the age of 63! I honestly have never felt so well or so fit!

Please watch the programme and then I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Hello there, I have lost almost three stone in 7 months by attending Slimming World, its the best way and healthiest way to lose weight, once I got started it dropped off me. I can highly recommend Slimming World and if you got a Facebook account, if you join you can use their group for support and help. I love my group, attend every Tuesday even though I am at target, keeps me on the straight and narrow. You can eat a ton of stuff without ever feeling hungry. No food is banned, you can eat fruit all day and still lose weight, I have loved every step of my journey. I am not a consultant, just a normal person who one day walked into the class out of sheer desperation. I have gone from a size 18/20 to 8/10 and loving my new me and wardrobe.

Hi Beth

Thanks very much for this info - I will bear it in mind as I have never attended a slimming class, always tried to do it myself - it may be something worth doing in the future if this attempt by me fails - I've heard lots of good things about it.

I have been a member of Slimming World for a year now and I will be one for the rest of my life. I tried losing weight at home but feel I need the discipline of a class to keep me on the straight and narrow. Yes it does cost money to begin with but once you reach your target weight your attendance at class is free. You have 3lbs leeway either way of your target weight. My target weight is 8st 7lbs but have gone down to 8st 4lbs and have also gone up to 8st 11lbs but since September have stayed within these boundaries. I have not found it difficult and I have made a whole new group of friends too. Our group are just lovely and you get a heap of support. Whichever way you decided to lose the pounds is your choice. Personally, I love attending a class and will attend class whenever I can.

hi i am new on here. notice you mentioned sliming world.i joined it 3 weeks ago on line. i just dont understand it! i have read it and read it but i just dont understand what to eat and how it works. years ago i did weight watchers and lost 3 stone. kept it off for 3 yrs but sadley 20yrs later its back on and more! any help would be much appreciated

Beth1471 profile image
Beth1471 in reply tojules56

I am not familiar with Slimming World online apart from using the website to weigh in and look for syns and recipes. When I first joined I wanted to know about the Extra Easy method rather than the green or red days. The mantra is to fill your plate two thirds full of Super Free veg, ie., cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, butternut squash etc., then you add your meat and potatoes if you are having any. The green and red days are on green days you eat things like jacket potatoes with beans or you can eat pasta dishes or rice dishes. On red days you fill your plate with meat and all the free veg you can eat.

That's fine if you can afford it. I lost weight without spending any money at all, and in fact saved a fortune towards my new wardrobe. The largest people I know have SW certificates all over their fridges. The problem with a 'diet' rather than a lifestyle change is that these slimming clubs make their money from those who stop 'dieting' and put all the weight back on again, so then have to go back, and so the circle continues. I've kept my weight off since last April by just fasting (500 calories) one day a week and will do so for the rest of my life.

Beth1471 profile image
Beth1471 in reply togingernut49

My comment was just a suggestion, if the lady in question finds it difficult to lose weight at home perhaps a class would suit her. That was it. I can afford the classes, I don't smoke or part take in any alcohol. £4.95 per week is not that much if you get results at the end of it.

gingernut49 profile image
gingernut49 in reply toBeth1471

I live on £20 a week!

Beth1471 profile image
Beth1471 in reply togingernut49

I am truly sorry about that. Obviously I don't know you or your circumstances. All I was doing was suggesting the classes.

This is all about lifestyle changes and not a diet. I have not gone hungry following this plan and have now lost about 25lb with another few to go. I have also been doing c25k and am about to do the 3rd run of week 5. Along with other exercise my body shape has changed for the better and I feel much fitter and stronger.

My tips are plan, plan & plan, initially weigh portions, although I still do, don't get too hungry - I could never do 5:2 although I know it works for some, use smaller plates and although I don't eat a lot of bread I buy small loaves as the slices are smaller.

Unklike slimming world etc this is free and lots of support on this forum. Good luck and and when people start to see the changes in you it will totally motivate you.

Hi Windswept - Thanks for this - Have only just recently found this web site but I've spent a long time searching it and there seems to be some excellent help and guidance - Am definitely going to give it a go. I've already done 35 mins of exercise to a DVD and just dragged my massive, and unti lnow, never used cross-trainer into the living room - it looks awful but hopefully it'll remind me to jump on every now and again. Oh just remembered, I'm not supposed to be starting until tomorrow :)

I have just completed the 3rd run of week 5 of the c25k with a 20 minute run so delighted with that. Good luck with the cross trainer.

Hi Lindam

Different things work for different people, but the Livewell plate is a good place to start. If you are changing what you eat or how much you eat, just take it slowly to give your body a chance to get used to it. I found that cutting down on refined, processed foods and sugar was a good place to start, and should help your cholesterol levels to go down too.

I have lost weight by controlling how much carbohydrate I eat and keeping to the high fibre ones, but keeping some healthy natural fats in my diet.

This may be an interesting site for you to look at.

Hi Penel - Thanks for the link - its a great web site and I've put it in my 'favourites' - I'm going to start with the step about improving sleep. I'm sure this is contributing lots to my weight gain and also general well being. I only usually get about four hours of sleep a night and am constantly tired so I'mgoing to really focus on this as part of my change of lifestyle Thank you

Kimmieblue profile image
Kimmieblue

Oh please, please let me know how you get on!! I'm in the same position but I just can't muster up any motivation or willpower! I'm always hungry too. All the best.

gingernut49 profile image
gingernut49 in reply toKimmieblue

Hunger is just a sign that your body is burning fat and it doesn't get worse but goes in waves. If you have a drink and then distract yourself it will pass.

Penel profile image
Penel in reply togingernut49

Hunger does not necessarily mean that your body is burning fat. Fat will only be released from your cells for the body to use once insulin is low in your system, which means that you need to have stopped eating carbohydrates for a while.

gingernut49 profile image
gingernut49 in reply toPenel

I know the science, thanks Penel.

Penel profile image
Penel in reply toKimmieblue

Perhaps try eating more protein to combat the hunger and cut down on the 'white' processed foods like sugar and bread.

and from another Linda who also had to lose 3 stone. Also on the same plan as Gingernut49 which seems to have been designed with me in mind as I find it's the one thing that I can fit around work etc. My blood pressure and cholesterol level has also dropped since doing this, in fact it's a way of eating to keep you healthy, the weight loss was a secondary effect. I've lost 9Kg since January and it's a gradual weight loss rather than lots of lbs at once. Definitely watch the link Gingernut49 has shown here. Could change your life - seriously. And good luck.

Hello Lindam, I'm in the same situation: diagnosed with very high cholesterol - the bad type :( in December, and needing to lose around 3 stone to get to the top of the healthy weight range for my height. I've lost one stone since December and am hoping that my cholesterol is also going down.

lindam55 profile image
lindam55 in reply to

Hi Anthony2014

Losing a stone since December is really good - Are you having your cholesterol checked regularly. I haven't had mine done for a while so should really check with my doctor. Both my parents had high cholesterol and the doc said it's inherited, but I'm really going to try hard with this plan in the hope, like you, that it improves. Good luck with your weight loss and let me know how you're getting on

Penel profile image
Penel in reply tolindam55

There is a discussion site on HealthUnlocked for people with high cholesterol, Heart UK, which you might find interesting if you haven't found it already.

in reply tolindam55

I was told about it in December when had blood tests. Doctor said to try to reduce it through changing what I eat, have another test in 6 months times, and if its not down through changing eating habits, to go on statins. I really don't want to be on medication that you have to take for the rest of your life, and so am trying to do it through what I'm eating and also get a bit more exercise. I had also wanted to lose weight, but never had the motivation, so finding out about the cholesterol has given me the motivation to eat healthily. I've had a bit of a blip over the last two weeks when I was off work for half term and had a cold and started reverting to some unhealthy eating. But now want to get back on track again. Really don't want to ever get above 30BMI again and be officially obese.

Hi Linda

I also have to lose three stone, the amount can be daunting, but if you get focused and stay that way you can do it.

I've lost a stone over the last six weeks and it feels great to in control of what I'm eating, its also fab to get into clothes I "grew out of " ages ago.

It's suprising how quick you can get used to grazing on fruit instead of chocolate.

Hope things work out better than you dreamed.

Hi Linda forget about slimming clubs and fad diets. This is not about a short term fix or how fast you can lose stoooonnnnes. Its about the rest of your life and how you want the future to be for you.Any changes you make should be things that you can keep up for years. So make them small and sustainable.Even if you take off a pound a fortnight that's still a lot of weight over the year.Try to think long term its the best way to achieve your goal. All the best pal and stay positive

Hi there

I liked your post, can I just say that you've come to the right place if you want support, this forum has been a godsend to me,I am currently on week 7 and have lost 1. Stone 4 pounds and just feel so much healthier,I have about another stone to go and I'm at my goal weight then,I just got totally fed up of diet clubs and also of wasting money,it's very easy to follow this plan,I've got a very sweet tooth and have cut out all the cakes, don't eat much bread,I don't have choccy biscuits anymore but always have rich tea incase I am desperate,it's just more about common sense than anything else, watching portion sizes has also had a big impact on my weight,I also keep a food diary which helps me keep a check on myself,I know frozen meals are never the best but just to give you an idea about portion size weightwatchers frozen meals are not too bad, hope everything goes well for, start as you mean to go on xx

That sounds like a sensible plan and not a diet. I too lost my wieght over several months and still have a few lbs to go but it is sustainable as a way of eating permanently for me now.
