Hi Fisherman56,

small steps every day, with exercise and food choices and you CAN do it and you WILL do it.

Make little changes and keep at it! There is some amazing info on this site and really supportive people!

best of luck!!

Hi there - you can do it - definitely! Thing is - we have to take one step at a time. These mealplans are really good - I also use a Protein shake that is really really good - contains trisorb proteins which helps to burn fat and build lean muscle plus you get all the vitamins and minerals you need. Im getting mine for free even. Let me know, and I can point you in the right direction!

You deserve to have individual support from your GP surgery with this - make sure they know you want it, they are all supposed to be set up to provide it. I discovered that "refused to discuss weight reduction" had been put on my medical records after I foolishly allowed a practice nurse to weigh me when I went for a routine screening. She told me I was obese which came as a bit of a shock. I certainly didn't refuse to discuss weight reduction.

(The good news is that I have not been obese for some time now, still working on the 'overweight')

Hi Fisherman.... You could ask your GP to refer you for some CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) which really helps a LOT of pple... If you sometimes eat for emotional reasons, which most of us speaking for myself, you need to look at stuff a little more in-depth, and CBT helps in that respect - but they also have suggestions, some of which you will find on this site, like AVOIDING GOING DOWN THE CAKE COUNTER when doing shopping at the supermarket - a few simple things like that, and most importantly writing down all you eat and then review this with the therapist to see if there are patterns and how they can be tackled in a healthier way... I have been on 2 courses, and found each of them extremely helpful. Sadly I relapsed, but then I have had this prob since the age of 13!!!!!! Take care and good luck. Marguerite x

Hello Fisherman56,

I have struggled with my weight all through my adulthood. I finally reached 25st three years ago. My health was extremely poor. I could not carry my washing out to the line, carry bags of shopping, I used the shopping trolley to lean over on as I shopped to take some weight off my back-otherwise I could not walk, I could only walk for a few minutes at a time before having to rest my back & legs & cool down, I had an Angina attach in 2010, Irritable bowel syndrome, severe depression & sleep apnea . I did not have a normal life and exercise was impossible I was always in pain and tired. Over the years I have tried many weight loose programmes and even loosing up to 7stone-on a very low calorie diet and when going back to normal food I would just put the weight back on plus more. I applied under the NHS for bariatric surgery & was accepted. I was on the weighting list for over two years and on 9.3.13 at 24st 6lbs I had the Vertical Gastric Sleeve - a fairly newish bariatric operation where 85% of my stomach was removed but my food still passes through my now sleeve shaped stomach -so I still absorb all nutrients digested. By removing most of my stomach which also produces the hormone gerling - which is the hormone that tells the brain your hungry .I now do not feel Hungry now. After 4 and a half months I have lost a whopping 6st! I increased my exercise slowly by walking in the swimming pool- yes I can swim but at over 24st I could not physically swim or breath sufficiently. I started at 5mins then resting and doing another 5mins. I now can do an hour non stop in the pool and I go every other day. My diet now consists of 700calories and this is made up of mainly protein (70g of protein min per day= approx 550cals). I can now put my own washing out, walk my dog, do my house work without having to rest in between rooms and 2/3 x in the lounge. My diet will change when I'm at a healthy weight and will be calculated to remain at that weight or within a range. I have achieved so much in such a little time and I have had some difficulties along the way. But those difficulties are far outweighed by my improved health. I now attend a monthly group support session and have met people pre and post various bariatric surgeries (both private and NHS patients who are under various hospitals) I would only advice against one surgery for our weight range and that's the band as your stomachs is still fully intact you would still feel hunger! I'm not saying surgery is for everyone but in my case I am now able to live my life. I never used to go out as I was too big for other people's, cinema and restaurant chairs and hAd to have parking really close. I had a disability parking permit at wrk which I no longer need. Whichever healthy program you choose make sure your GP is behind you and request support. You've got to think of yourself and become your no 1 priority. I still find that really hard but I'm getting there. Good Luck and please keep the forum updated on your choices, hardships and achievement to enable us all to support you. Oh I can also put my shoes on now without having to lift my leg up to rest on my knee to put them on and do up my laces. Achievement achievement achievement xxx

Wow I have similar issues as yourself but I cannot get any NHS assistance . 63 and 132kg . Since my earliest memory I have had weight issues , not sure but blocked bowel op may have had some input?? Spent 15 years in military but no change only used as guinea pig for some medical trials. Now lifestyle compromised seriously . I know I comfort eat but cannot get out of this situation. Just to put socks on can be a issue. Now live on my own family live 10 miles away. I rember most of my life I was told to slow down always walked and worked fast . Now I can hardly walk and have had Heart attack, Angina, Asthma, Varicose veins and Thickening of Blood. Trained Chef so into balanced meals

Would just love to be normal but then what is normal today ?? NHS ???? Well done for your fantastic achievement .

Dear Ardersier 12, have you tried a high protein diet, appetite supresants, fat expelling meds, lighter life, herbalife. Although walking and moving may be difficult - have you tried walking in the pool? Referral to dietician? Although your a chief and are eating a balanced diet, I teach nutrician and still got my own body needs massively wrong. I've now lost 7st and movement is so much easier. Sure slim was a diet I tried which was normal foods and they tested my blood to see which foods worked and did not work for me. I did well on that programme too and would highly recommend that programme. I was never good at weight watchers skimmers world as I did not enjoy the group sessions where sure slim is natural food and one to one support. Good luck with what you choose to do next. Please let me know how your doing?

Regards

Sharon

Fisherman56 this can be done so don't despair, if you read my profile you'll see I was in the exact same place as you weight wise 3 years ago, I weighed myself this morning and I'm currently 12 stone 4 Pounds.

It won't be easy, you've a mammoth task ahead of you both mentally and physically, should you decide to undertake it. I'm sure you also realise the consequences should you not.

I'm short of time this morning, hence the short reply but if I can be of any help or support then please feel free to send me a message.

Best Wishes and like I said don't despair.

Definitely walk into that GP surgery determined and tell them you want help to loose weight. They should absolutely give you help and advice, it is their duty of care as your doctor to give you help if you ask for it.

When I went to the GP a few years back they offered me Orlistat which is a pill you take with each meal. It stops a portion of the fat contained in that meal from being absorbed but as that fatty oil has to go somewhere ... Well lets just say if you have a very fatty meal like a burger or sausage etc it can be embarrassing, this was why I didn't like it. However, it can help to remove more weight quicker if used while eating in a healthy balanced way. So that is a possibility.

GPs can refer you to a dietian to help you with constructing a diet that works for you and is balanced. If you asked to be referred I think they would have a hard time justifying why not.

A previous post had about cognitive therapy which is a great idea. Most of us eat for emotional reasons, reasons not to do with food. There are lots of therapy that could help from talk therapy to NLP and hypnosis. I am trying to follow the NHS 12 weeks plan but I know from past experience that after a few weeks my motivation just disappears and then I berate myself for failing and eat more. For this reason I have decided to try and find the route of my comfort eating and see a therapist. Not sure if this will work as I have just had 1 session so far but I feel positive.

Exercise wise just do a small amount to begin with. Like a walk to a shop or around the block or doing some cleaning and then go from there. Getting to grips with the calories you are having can be depressing but it can also give you control. The NHS 12 week program (which is starting as a group weigh in this Monday on this forum) is pretty good as you can print out a sheet and put it on the fridge etc. it is a calorie counting program which may get you into understanding what foods have what nutritional levels in them. I would also say to set yourself a goal but a small one like 5% weight loss and then set some rewards for yourself that are not to do with food (as a woman jewellery and clothes tend to be mine).

There are surgical measures to weight loss for obesity which can work but I would try other things first, especially therapy because a surgical band will not remove the reason food has become an issue in the first place.

I hope this helps. Definitely demand help from your GP, you have every right to that help. Lots of luck and good going on joining the forum and talking a first step. Keep writing.

Thank you for feedback, the doctor is a complete waste of effort. I have asked so many times over the years and it appears it all depends on your practise and their personal views on Weightloss. Patients wishes are not taken into account as I believe most Doctors believe the cause is Lifestyle. Every case I believe is individual and the causes may be grouped as on my own case Comfort Eating due to unfortunately the number of years of embarrassment and shame , guilt and lack of confidence. From been bullied in school and military to job interviews when you are discriminated . When your Man Boobs are so very obvious and you don't share in your children's play time. Or there friends are commenting to your children. Diets so many weight loss so many times when clothes altered and the tailor warns better to buy as after reducing one cannot increase so easy. I HAVE A WEIGHT PROBLEM . Surgery out due to Heart and Health issues. 50 plus years of imprisoned in this ??? Well enough Mortal Obesity till the last day so be it.

Have you heard of the 5:2 Diet? It really does work and it's not like slimming clubs where they just want your money - I just watched a TV programme, bought a book and off I went. I lost the three stone I needed to in six months. There are plenty of men on the Facebook groups I belong to that have had amazing results. Please watch the BBC Horizon programme, "Eat, Fast and Live Longer," on vimeo.com/54089463. It will change your life. The principle is that you eat 500 calories (600 for men) two non-consecutive days a week and just eat normally but sensibly on the other five. If you're on Facebook you can find out more from the various groups on there, and I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. The best part about it is that once you've lost the weight you want to, you can maintain your loss by just 'fasting' one day a week. Please watch the programme. You've nothing to lose except your unhappiness.
