Yes - if you want to lose weight and keep it off the first thing you must do is to watch this BBC Horizon programme, "Eat, Fast and Live Longer" vimeo.com/54089463 that changed my life! Please do watch it, and then I'll answer your questions. I lost three stone in six months and have kept the weight off nearly a year. With any other 'diet' I'd have put it all back on again by now and this hasn't cost me anything at all - except for my new smaller clothes!

It does boil down to your attitude towards food, your relationship with it.

Blood type diet helps too. The evidence is plain to see, all calories and foods are not equal too. Took me a long time to emotionally stop eating, for comfort, and my connections with it , that is the hard bit.

I know just how you feel, I need to loose 7 stone, I started the calorie counting plan 31 days ago, I have 1340 cals and have lost 1 stone 2 lbs. I have been a contant dieter but have never done calorie counting before, its been so easy. I down loaded myfitnesspal on my phone n tablet and logged eveything I've eaten. Good luck you can do it

Wow you're doing really well, if you have 7 stone to lose how do you find the energy to cycle?. I have 4 stone to lose but I seem to have no energy at all. Keep up the good work and all the best. X

Maybe you eat foods that cause this, for me, ordinary bread, corn flour , strawberries and other foods make me bloat. I'm O positive, and these foods I shouldn't eat. Check out blood type diet, works very well.

CathC14 finding your mojo is the most important start! I became so ill with who knows what as investigation showed nothing so.......I turned my life around and from November I have lost 23lbs (I weigh the last Friday each month so that loss is until the end of February). I've stopped processed food - no white rice or bread or pasta - lots of Veg and Salad including Avacado and a little fruit - stoneground Wholemeal bread - a little full fat Greek yogurt, Butter and cheese - fish and occasional chicken. I use the FitnessPal application to monitor my food and exercise and I have another 4 stone to lose to the acceptable height and weight measures. I power walk 3/4 times weekly for 60 minutes. FitnessPal have me on 1670 calories per day to lose a 1lb a week. Sometimes I go over sometimes under. The day I exercise 700 calories are added to my intake - I use the Endomondo application when walking and it monitors my pace and so much more and then links the calories burned to Fitnesspal. I do go out and eat and Indian or Italian but I choose carefully and I'll have red wine so I never deprive myself of anything because real life to me is an occasional "change of habit"! I feel amazing after feeling so ill and that is the most positive outcome for me. I have a friend who like Gingernut49 has been following the 5:2 eating plan and lost 12lbs over 7 weeks - she has 2 stone to lose - and she finds it a great way to lose weight so it's what will work best for you - good luck and go for it!!

CathC14 I did exactly the same...anytime I felt unhappy, stressed or even bored I would turn to food..then feel even worse after devouring the amount of junk in front of me. I would think oh well a bit more won't hurt and it became a vicious circle! It's a hard thing to stop doing! I am on week 3 of the NHS weight loss plan, with the help of the app 'my fitness pal' the first week was the most difficult, changing old habits and all that!! In the 2nd week I started some exercise..not as much as they recommend, but I plan to build up the amount slowly! So far as of the Sunday just gone I have lost 12lbs in total and have also been measuring my waist, hips etc and have lost a couple of inches from these areas already, (my clothes are already feeling more comfortable). Don't get me wrong I have a long long way to go to be a healthy weight! My current bmi is 35 - OBESE!

I'm not looking at this as a diet, me and my husband have now changed the what and way we eat for life! My husband is doing exactly the same as me (except he is allowed more calories) and he has lost 10lbs as of last Sunday! I already feel more positive and I think this is because I am treating my body with more respect. We both took a before picture so we can compare how we look as we lose each stone! We plan our evening meals and shop accordingly! A another knock on effect of cutting out the junk for me is my skin is so much clearer, which has also helped me to feel good! Wishing you lots of luck! Let us know how you get on. X

Lovely to hear, very shifting my extra 5 lbs I gained through being unemployed. My snacks are my downfall.

I definitely recommend the NHS plan as a way of changing eating habits. My advice is to plan meals and shop accordingly, don't get too hungry so that you rush for anything so plan in healthy snacks, weigh portions to start with and use smaller plates. Lots of people on this site have had massive improvements in health so good luck to you both.

Choose another comfort, cat cuddles work wonders for me, as do clear hot drinks, chat to your nearest and dearest. Use the 20 min rule, of craving or hunger.

As with most my relationship with food was pre programmed from childhood, my fav foods , the why and how took a while to unravel.

Why I felt bloated or not, was solved by blood type diet, the withdrawal of certain foods was fine when I found replacements, ditched my fat body and felt free.

The journey is tough, not about food as such, more about you, weight watchers, slimming world and such will not address this, lighter life will to some extend.

Good luck and take care, save for the slimmer you, and re portion your foods, know what to expect.
