Eating 1400 calories but I exercise a lot.....is it enough?

I just wondered if on my exercise days I should eat more to fuel my body. I do cardio interval training, spin, kettlercise and body pump.......burning an average of 400 cals per session from a heart rate monitor. I do about 4 sessions per week on average.

Hi melmc,

For several good reasons, which I don't have the time to go into right now - fast weight loss is not a good idea.

So, if your rate of weight loss (after the first couple of weeks or so), is greater than 1 kg (2.2 lbs) per week on average - we all have blips and spurts - then I would recommend you either up your calorie intake a tad, or reduce your exercise/activity a tad.

Recommended weight loss rate is an averaged out 1 to 2 lbs a week.

Just be a wee bit careful though. It's very easy to start eating back the calories expended in exercise or even to start eating back more than your burning off in exercise.

Good luck with your weight loss journey.

Thanks Doiksop......if I exercise I tend to eat another 100-150 cals on top of the 1400 so I will see how this pans out over the next few weeks. Just started (again!) on Monday. I've got about 12kgs to lose to be a healthy BMI.

Hi melmc,

I can't give a professional opinion, but I do know when I was following a popular diet plan and going to the gym 4 times a week I almost fainted more than once during my sessions. Additionally, I became very moody from feeling hungry all the time. I ditched the diet and carried on with the exercise along with just generally eating healthily, and felt a whole lot better!

I was excersing the same amount (if not more) and still not losing weight.

I realized my body was going into a sort of shock or flight / fight mechanism and holding on to my fat reserve.

About a month ago I reduced the intensity of my exercise and started taking one Vi shake at lunch and since then I have lost two inches around my waistline. I feel great for not having near exhausted myself everyday in the gym and am getting fitter. If you want more information about the shakes I take once a day then check out visalus.uk.com. All the best.
