How do you know if you're developing cysts?

I've just been diagnosed with PCOS with a low SHBG, <12 follicles in both ovaries, normal FAI and ovaries are normal size and volume.I just had a few questions...

What does the amount of follicles mean? Are this mini cysts?

How do you know if a cyst is growing? Is painful and is there any way of reducing the risk of a growing cyst?

They've suggested hormone treatment, however I think I'm going to try and treat it through lifestyle as I've never reacted well to hormones.

Thanks in advance!

if SHBG is low you should also get your thyroid checked.
