Hi. I’m 18 years old and my doctor has told me I could have PCOS. Has anyone got any tips on how I can get my head around this because it’s all too much to take in. And have you got any tips on how I can lose weight because I’ve been struggling quit a bit.? Thank you!

A healthy diet and exercise. Try not to snack, as the more you eat the more insulin is produced and more weight you will put on.If you have to snack make it healthy. Try to avoid bread and pasta if you can, or do not have them more than once in a day. Cut out sugar and try to stick to one or two fruits a day, again too much sugar produces additional insulin. It is almost like being a diabetic, but without the seriousness of being a diabetic. I'd also recommend cutting meat down, as that as alot of calories. Try go for 10,000 steps everyday or start couch to 5k, or get down the gym if you can. Exercise with a healthy diet, should start shifting the pounds.

Thank you so much! I’m a massive snacker so I know that deep down I’m going to have to stop that. But I will have a go at everything you’ve said. Thank you again

Hi there Molly! Welcome to the club. Please don't worry, PCOS can be managed and reversed with as LisaEB says a clleaner diet (lessen refined carbs while adding more nuts and seeds into your regime) and exercise - things like yoga will also help. Half the battle with PCOS is lack of information and support. I have found doctors aren't the most helpful at explaining the condition and just prescribe the Pill (the Pill offers some respite from symptoms but it surpresses your cycle which is counter intuitive to reversing PCOS so I would avoid unless you need it for contraceptive).

In addition to diet and exercise, it helps to educate yourself. Read about PCOS or even how a regular cycle works in order to then learn what causes it not to work properly (insulin resistance, excess androgen etc) a good book is Period Power by Maisie Hill- i learnt so much about how our cycles work.

If on Instagram there is a growing community talking about PCOS education I follow people like @harnessyourhormones @the.Pcos. Nutritionist @nourishednaturalhealth @veritypcos. Some of these accounts are of women who have reversed their pcos using natural remedies. Also look up seed cycling- that has helped me.

Seriously don't worry. Pcos can be sorted and i know many fellow PCOS sufferers who have gone on to have kids naturally. It'll be fine. X

Thank you so much for your reply. That has really put my mind to rest. I’ll take on board everything you’ve said. I’ll definitely give yoga a go! I’m just happy to know that I’m not alone in this x

Not a problem. You're young so have lots of time to get a good routine in place. I wish I had found out all this stuff 10 years ago.
