Pcos symptom flare up?

Sorry if this subject makes 0 sense, as I’m yet to be diagnosed and basically just winging this crap!

I wondered, if there is such a thing as a flare up rather than a constant problem, and what symptoms can show at this time.

My acne has been up and down for months now but this week it has been at its absolute worst. I’m getting kidney pains/frequent urination at night (blood sugars fine), and the last two days I have felt exhausted! I’ve laid on the sofa all day today which is very unlike me. All I’ve wanted to do is eat carbs, and usually my diet is balanced well.

Is this normal for it to flare symptoms like this? I have no idea and am so new to all this...!

Any advice appreciated:)

Hey there,

Dont worry your making sense!

PCOS is triggered by high levels of androgens (male sex hormones) so yes you'll find symptoms fluctuate over the course of your cycle.

So my first suggestion is to keep a "period" diary and log your symptoms over time you'll tune in to your body which will help you plan around the exhaustion, which can hit you like a sledge hammer. It will also be really useful for appointment with GP's, consultants etc

Secondly, if you drink caffeine, stop. It will make such a huge difference because the bladder issues can drive you insane. Personally I use Pukka peppermint and liquorice tea, it helps with nausea and bloating and liquorice can help lower androgen levels when used over time (there is however no known effective dose for this) but my acne has been less aggressive over the last 2 months drinking 2 cups a day!

Thirdly, start googling foods/supplements that can help reduce androgen level as well as anti inflammatory foods. PCOS and insulin resistance can go hand in hand, so be cautious of carbs(sugars) and spiking your blood sugars(binging) late at night. Don't worry we all do it because carbs make everything better 🤔😂

I've had PCOS for several years and the key to manage it is to manage your lifestyle. Western medicines and surgeries will only go so far.

There'll be days where you have no energy and those are tough days, but be kind to yourself and work to find balance because spending too much time bunched up on the sofa is sooo harmful... Don't worry we're all guilty of it!

Dont approach your treatment with the view of curing the condition, because you may never do that. Instead focus on helping to support and heal the body.

With time and patience, anything is possible.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best of look x
