Anyone else diagnosed by ultrasound and not bloods?

Hi all

I’ve been told I have PCOS based on my ultrasound results. My bloods showed normal. I don’t really understand this as aren’t the cysts caused by hormone imbalance etc?

Anyone else in the same boat?

Thanks x

Hi Laura I had exactly this. This was before I was referred to the fertility clinic and they told me without doubt I had polycyclic ovaries. I was really upset as like you my bloods came back fine and I have never had any issues with my cycle. Anyway after my referral to the clinic the sonographer there looked at my notes and before she even scanned me she told me there is no way I have polycystic ovaries and that the previous person had got it wrong. She scanned me and said I do have multiple follicles but definitely not polycystic ovaries and not to worry about it. So it could be that this is what has happened with you too. I never believed the diagnosis I got and I was right. You know your own body better than anyone.

Oh okay! Sorry they messed up your diagnosis!! I went back yesterday and comfort a second opinion on my bloods and this other doctor said my bloods definitely do show it so she doesn’t know why I was told they don’t 🤦‍♀️

Hi Laura, the exact same thing has happened to me! I am a little overweight, so after my scan I felt like my gp jumped to that diagnosis - all of my bloods were normal. I've made an appointment now to see a gynaecologist to investigate further, but am really not convinced that I have it. I'll update you once I've had my appointment, fingers crossed :)

Let me know how you get on!

I’ve been back to see a different doctor and she said my bloods do show it! So I’m not sure why the previous one said they didn’t. Been told I have to lose weight and go back in 3 months x

Hi Laura, just to get back to you on this, I was the same as Suzy86, the gynaecologist said that I do have follicles, which means I have polycystic ovaries, but I dont have PCOS, which I thought myself because my periods are regular. I suppose it's interesting to know that ultrasound does not give a complete picture. Best of luck xx

It’s crazy how they just jump to conclusions and worry people needlessly. Bedside manner isn’t great going through this process I have found! I’m glad you got some answers xxx

Yes, dont really need the bloods if the scan shows the follicles, the follicles (cycsts) can come and go as only a symptom and not the cause. I think that blood confuses the diagnosis to be honest as longs of ladies have 'normal' blood but cysts and are told it isnt pcos, whereas the cysts are confirmation of the condition.

It is extremely common for blood tests to come back as normal as they are not done at the correct time.
