Gaining weight due to PCOS?!

(Im 14 years old) I wasn't getting any periods for about 6 months, i was growing hair in random places and gaining weight really fast so i went to see my GP. They took tests and then said it was PCOS. I booked another appointment so my GP could talk to me about the syndrome and she gave me some contraceptive pills i should take everyday for 3 weeks and then stop for one week in order to get a fake bleed and then start again and to also balance my hormones. She also said that i should start eating healthy and excercising more as people with PCOS gain weight really quickly and even though im not fat im finding it quite hard to stick to completely healthy eating but i know i should before i regret it?! Im now 57 kilos and was only about 45 a few back! Are there any slim people with this?? What should I do? And im scared i can't get fertiile in the future?

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time. I have endometriosis as well as PCOS and I am 5’8” and weight 10 stone. However I hardly eat anything and people think I’m joking when I tell them that as I’m not skin and bone but if I were normal and didn’t have PCOS I would be. My body is used to the way I eat now and I have to remember to eat as I very rarely get hungry. I do like chocolate though but I try to stick to darker chocolate as it contains less fat. Has anyone explained what actually happens because of the PCOS; your body is insulin intolerant and that is the hormone that usually breaks down sugars etc. Because it’s not functioning properly most of the sugar you take in gets turned into fat and stored so we put on weight.

Victoria Beckham actually suffers from PCOS too. So regarding fertility there are medications they can give you that should help your ovaries function correctly. The main thing is to do your best to keep your weight down as weight gain can make the symptoms of PCOS worse.

I know it’s not easy, I have 2 sisters and a brother and they are constantly hungry and are all stick thin. I joke that they eat the food and I put on the weight.

Victoria x

Hi there. I'm 38 and have PCOS. I have always yo-yo'd with my weight, but managed to get it down for quite a while until I had my daughter at 32. My weight suddenly shot up. I put it down to coming off the pill. I found a diet book specifically aimed at people with PCOS and it did help. Maybe you should take a look!

My situation isn't helped by the fact I have another condition that requires me to stick to a certain type of diet. Losing weight for me is a nightmare, but I always check things out with my GP if not sure!
