Digestive Enzymes

Hi all

Apologies as I know this isn't related to Vegan foods 'per se' but related to supplements.

I have been having a lot of problems with my skin and by looking online I would say that I have too much Histamine as I have bumps on my arms, legs, neck and back that itch a lot. I'm on anti-histamines that I got from my doctors and am relying on them as I'm even itching taking them. The doctor did give me some Steroid Cream and a Aqueous Menthol Cream for the itching.

I have carried out some more research on line and it's pointing towards diet, which I had guessed anyway but also about Digestive Enzymes helping but they ideally would need to contain:

Alpha-galactosidase, Amylase, Cellulase, Glucoamylase, Invertase, Lactase, Lipase, Malt diastase, Protease, Peptidase and one of more of the following: Xylanase, Pectinase, Hemicellulase, Phytase, Beta-glucanase.

It's a minefield out there wondering which ones to purchase, have any of used them? Also, I have had a look at reviews but of course you can't always trust those.

I appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Well this is odd as I developed the same problem last July/August (2018) I wondered if I had a gluten allergy but then after extensive research realised I had hives. It’s very difficult to diagnose exactly what causes it and I’ve never suffered with this before and for me I’m pretty sure it’s related to nuts. (I was eating nuts, making nut roast and also making my own nut milks).

At times I have been desperate and felt that I could literally cut my skin with a sharp knife it was so itchy. After everything else failed, even using a natural horse cream as a last resort, Yes, horse cream from Amazon! I gave up nuts and noticed a huge difference now I only have small outbreaks occasionally and use arnica gel which isn’t for itching at all but it worked for me.

Do you think yours could be a nut problem? I went to the chemist and was told to take anti histamines but I would rather find the root cause as I don’t take chemical drugs for anything due to a nightmare I found myself in after take anti malaria tablets a while back.

Oh my goodness Ali, how strange. I would have bever thought nuts would do it, do you have many now?

Yes my skin has been the same, so desperate at times I could scratch with a knife. I'm on quite strong anti histamines from the doctor. I've got bumps on the skins surface and it's mainly on my arms, legs, back and the top of my neck by the hairline. I had it all over my tummy a little while ago as well.

I'm going to go online and look at that horse cream so thank you for that.

I can't think I'm eating any one food in excess but some afternoons in the weeks I'll have some nuts.

Honestly diet is a nightmare🤔

Thank you so much for your reply. 🙏

I've got it slightly now but nothing like it was. Mine started on elbows, then ribs, hip, hair line and waist line but never two places at the same time. It just cleared in one place and a day or two later started somewhere else.I had some nuts last week and it started to come back again but it's under control. The Vogel I recommended was really good although not sure it's what it's for. It might also be caused from getting too hot maybe?

It's really strange how our bodies react. I also have it on my hairline, waist, lower back, arms, legs and some on my tummy.

Until I had the food poisoning I never had anything like it. I do think mine is connected to giving up gluten when I did.

I'm back to eating sourdough bread which is fine with my tummy. I'm going to make more sauerkraut, I've just started coconut kefir although not sure if I'll keep that up as it'll work out expensive if I don't use the coconut milk up in time. I've got a sourdough starter but it's not doing very well, it's got to do with using spelt flour as I'd never had any problems before.

I've bought some soap free, paraben free and animal friendly Sanex shower gel today, I think that may make a difference as well.😀

I'm going to have another look at the Vogel. Honestly it's trial and error.🤔

I really hope your skin stays healthy and you don't have anymore flare ups.

Thank you very much Kai, really appreciate your response.

I've just put Kefir grains in coconut milk, bought red cabbage to make sauerkraut and am trying to get my Spelt Sourdough starter to work it's proving difficult at the moment, don't know why as I've made sourdough with normal wholewheat flour loads of times.

Thank you very much for the links, I'm going to have a look at those.

Anything fermented can interfere with the breakdown of histamine. I would avoid the sourdough bread and/or try a diamine oxidase supplement.

in reply toGelfin

Thank you Gelfin, I didn't know that. Problem is it's a vicious circle as I was using fermentation to heal my gut from a very long and drawn out bout of food poisoning, I had IBS C which was quite mild until I had the illness.

I'll look at the Diamine Oxidase supplement so thank you for suggesting that.
