Hi, I have done both types of dialysis and have been a kidney patient for 40 years and seen a lot of changes. Neither are painful as such, you need to think about your lifestyle and how you are going to fit dialysis in to it. When I was younger I did HD overnight in centre because I had school, sport, social life etc. Also had home HD but I didn’t like it. I have terrible veins and hated needling myself! I also tried PD lately and proffered it but I am now 53 and married and it suited me. Wouldn’t have suited me when I was younger! My preferred treatment is transplant definitely. But that is a personal opinion. I am on my third. Second one lasted 28 blissful years. Had my third in May last year. Good luck with your choice!

I am in my forties and I chose to go with perotoneal dialysis (PD). It wasn't painful. A little inconvenient at 1st during training. But it was not difficult. When you are going training you can then do your dialysis at night while you sleep and then you are done for the whole day. I kept working the whole time. But most importantly PD is the healthier way to go. You are dialyzing every day instead of 3 times a week. Your fluid intake is very restricted on hemo dialysis. You have more freedom on Pd. Best of luck to you.
