Has anyone noticed an increase with their T and the use of Amitriptyline use for migraine headaches?
Amitriptyline: Has anyone noticed an increase... - Tinnitus UK
Amitriptyline
I have twice been prescribed amitriptyline - but not for migraine - though I have suffered from "standard" migraine and still suffer from retinal migraine.
The first prescription was more than 20 years ago, to treat postherpetic neuralgia (aftermath of shingles). I found it a very benign drug - as I believe most people do. I slept very well on it and it helped with the pain. It certainly did not give rise to my later T.
The second prescription, about 5 years ago, was to help me sleep when my T worsened considerably. It did not make the T any worse, but it was not sufficiently powerful to keep me asleep and I discontinued it as pointless.
We are all different. Other people may have their own experiences to relate.
I was on it for 4 days and noticed an increase in ringing Might have been psychological but doubt it
Now on mirtazapine and am managing
Reduced my dose to 6mg at this stage
Hi Treasures,Amitriptyline is known to make tinnitus worse. I do wonder sometimes if doctors ever read our notes! I do suffer from migraines myself, but have had this drug before for nerve pain - it was really no good for me. I am on propranolol 80mg slow release for my migraine prevention, and it has done the trick for me, but one mans medicine is another mans poison. I would say give it a fair trial - and see if it works for you .
Two years ago I was prescribed 10mg amitriptyline and within 48 hours I developed horrific tinnitus. My Dr agreed that the amitriptyline had caused this but kept me on it (for anxiety) for 6 weeks and it took 6 months to get myself gradually off it! Still have the terrible tinnitus!
Anecdotal evidence only but I took amitriptyline 10mg for migraines for about 6 months a few years ago. No changes on tinnitus. Tinnitus on one ear only, in general very high and annoying.
My GP started me on Amitriptyline 3 days after my T commenced suddenly. It has been my saviour for quality sleep. I have not noticed any effect on my T other than by getting a good night's sleep I am able to manage my T during the day better. I have been on it for 5 months and now reducing the dose, the only side effect is I still feel a little sleepy when I get up in the morning. Everyone's experience is different but for me it has been positive.
I have been taking 25mg of Amitriptyline for a couple of years now following my T diagnosis. It made no difference to the volume of sounds however it does help with my sleep.
