I destroyed my ears today and now I can't stop crying .

I have posted about my spikes here before but now I have really done it. Today I had a dentist appointment . I prepared myself with ear plugs and went there. At the end she took out a ultrasonic scaler and as soon as it touched my tooth I felt the vibrations travel to my ear. I told her to stop and explained to her that I have tinnitus and I don't want anything damaging my ears but she convinced me it was safe and Iet her use it on ne for some 7-8 minutes. Later I started thinking about it and decided to look up people's experiences and what do I see: people posting that their tinnitus became worse after that procedure and now mine also seems. And the worst part is that it's my fault. I let her convince me. I didn't do enough. Now my ears are probably messed up because I was too dumb. Because I was too careless. I wish that God would smite me so that I don't exist anymore.

We are all different. I have had T for more than 20 years, and it has been very severe for the past five of those. I respect your experience, and that of the other people whose experiences you have read about. I can only tell you of my own to weigh in the balance. I have had the ultrasonic scaler twice a year for many years. I have never taken any precautions before the appointment and it has never worsened my T. To be honest, I think it is a good thing, because it is very effective and is, therefore, one small way in which I look after my general health. I hope that your spike will calm down soon.

I hope se too. I will try to calm my feelings and see if that helps. Btw do you mean ultrasonic or did you mean to type electronic?

SausageMan - you had to have the work done. It’s done.If you made a mistake, you made a mistake. I don’t think you did make a mistake - but it’s done now. No good looking back. You will make many more in your life. Everyone does, I did, and I’m still here.

God is a God of love. He will not strike you down.

You cannot possibly go through life thinking “if I do this, then my tinnitus may get worse”. If you eat too many burgers - or indeed sausages - you might get diabetes. If you read the traffic wrong, you might get run over . Or not. Life is about making choices, some good and some bad. You will go through life making choices. You have to. That’s life.

Thanks for the reply! I feel ever so slightly better after reading perlcoder ' s and your post and tinnitus feels ever so slightly less intrusive so this gives me some hope. But still I am so angry at myself for not telling her to do it by hand.

I always find my tinnitus is much worse when I am thinking about it. You’ve conquered it before. You can do it again.

Hello sausage . I think it might help you to talk to someone in person. You could talk thru your hopes & fears . In the meantime imagine what you would say to someone else in your shoes. I'm sure you would be kind to them so be kind to yourself too. Don't beat yourself up anymore. You're doing just fine 🙂

It hurts my heart to read this. I have had T for 45 years, 26 fillings that were replaced at least twice each, lots of cleanings. I now ask that my teeth be cleaned manually and scraped with no ultrasonic. I tell the dentist to work FAST and explain why. I can’t be subjected to the noise. I don’t let anyone argue with me anymore. You must believe that you’re going to be okay. Keep your thoughts positive. This condition will destroy your mental health if you let it. In my experience it comes down to being a mind game.

Marlayna, hello to you, that’s a very long time to have had tinnitus . My dentist wants me to see the hygienist and I have not been because I believe in my own self cleaning , however dentists seem to these days insist we go to the hygienist , it hadn’t occurred to me that the noise might hurt my tinnitus , now another reason for avoiding their technical gadgets . Or do you think the hygienist is important to start going to . ?

Today something even worse happened. Some kid from my school threw a fire cracker about 5 metres away from a group of 20 people including me and now I am panicking .

I’ve had ultrasonic descaling and other dental procedures for years and it has never affected my T, and my T is severe.

Hi there, please try not to despair about Tinnitus like you I to went to the dentist yesterday I had treatment for 1 hour and 20 minutes most of which was using various drills mainly for prep for a bridge and crowns last night my Tinnitus kicked off mainly a copy of the treatment at the dentist. The thing with Tinnitus it prays on your anxiety the more upset you get the it feeds on That. Over time you will cope Tinnitus yes you will have bad days but also many goods ones with Tinnitus you have to try and hibernate the noise yes takes time do the things you enjoy your brain will start to push the noise into the background I've always said Tinnitus is the beast on your back don't be scared of it take it on beat it be positive I'm sure you can remember people on here have all been in your position me included enjoy life just tell your Tinnitus to ****off I'm sure you will.

Hi Sausage Man , I am so sorry you are feeling so bad, I really feel for you as I also had a very bad experience with the hygienist who wouldn’t stop, my Tinnitus was screaming for several weeks, so now I have told the dentist about it and she said although it’s a good idea to have teeth cleaned every 6 months as long as I carried on with my own flossing twice a day it should be ok, not every dentist is so understanding but you have a right to say if you are not comfortable with it.Try not to be so hard on yourself it isn’t your fault at all, they should have stopped when you told them to.

Hope you start to feel better soon , try to do something to take your mind off it.

Take care.
