I have had tinnitus since 2013 and started as something like a morse code sound and some whistling in my right ear but recently, it has become louder and the noise is kind of hard to describe but it sounds like an almost constant alarm in my head as well as whistling. I have also had acid reflux since 2016 and have managed to keep it in check with medicine until summer of this year when they stopped working. My questions are, is the acid reflux and tinnitus flare up related, will my tinnitus get worse, and what are my options from here, what help is available? Thank you and god bless.

Tinnitus louder after 11 years
Hello Modern Life
Please don't worry you have come to right place for help and advice.
Is there any specific reason your Tinnitus has flared up? Anything triggered it?
I cant find any links to Tinnitus and acid reflux. Well worth talking to your GP about both independently though.
When Tinnitus flares up as you say it can be linked to changes in your hearing so that is one route to review with a health professional.
We know bothersome Tinnitus is made worse by anxiety and over monitoring so I would recommend getting into your toolbox and finding strategies to relax your nervous system. Hot showers/walking/gaming/Lego and watching movies really help me but the list is potentially endless.
If struggling to sleep then gentle white noise like a fan noise really works for me.
Tinnitus gets better (Easier to manage) over time so try not to worry as this increases our perception of Tinnitus.
There is so much information online but I would suggest you arrange an ENT appointment via your GP so they can help you with a management plan and put your mind at ease about causes etc.
I am sure the flare up will settle down soon but remember to be kind to yourself while your nervous system settles down and remember that you have adjusted to Tinnitus in the past and you will adjust to it again if required.
Take care
Thank you for the reply, I was wondering if my brain would adjust to it like it did in the past and hopefully with time and faith it will. I don't know what made it flare up again to be honest with you but I do work in a fairly noisy environment so I was also wondering if ear protectors or hearing aids were the way to go and what the pros and cons are when for using them. I have found that having a hot shower as well as gaming and listening to YouTube vids does relax me and takes my mind off the tinnitus. Thanks for the advice, it puts my mind at ease a little.
Hi ModernLifeYour tinnitus flare up could be a result of acid reflux, it's a well known issue. Look up GERD and tinnitus, you might find something of help.
Good luck.
Just to clarify GERD can cause issues with the ear which can then potentially cause Tinnitus. But there would be other symptoms like ear infection and hearing loss. Best to treat both the Gerd and Tinnitus but I wouldn't necessarily try and link the 2 together. Anything (and the list is long!) that causes any kind of symptoms related to the ear/inner ear can cause Tinnitus of course but rather than linking the 2 its more helpful to look at your hearing health as a whole I think.
"I was wondering if my brain would adjust to it like it did in the past and hopefully with time and faith it will." It will with time and care
I was also wondering if ear protectors or hearing aids were the way to go and what the pros and cons are when for using them" Being sensible with your hearing exposure is the right thing to do. I do remember having a phase though where i was constantly looking a decibel meter and twiddling with hearing aids and headphones far too much which only gave my Tinnitus more attention. Finding a good balance of protecting your hearing and not giving your tinnitus worked well for me
"gaming and listening to YouTube vids does relax me and takes my mind off the tinnitus" keep trying new things, i was amazed at some of the things i never liked before Tinnitus that helped take my mind off it. Walks in nature being one, listening to 80s music (seems to have sounds that helped calm my tinnitus. I couldnt styand nature and 80s music pre Tinnitus
Thank you for sharing your experience. It sounds like you’ve been through quite a lot with your tinnitus, and I can understand how distressing it must be to have the sounds change and intensify over time.
While there can be connections between various health issues, including acid reflux and tinnitus, it’s important to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice. They can help you explore whether there’s any link and what might be done to address both concerns.
In terms of managing your tinnitus, one effective approach that many find helpful is tinnitus music therapy. This method uses specially designed music to help mask the sounds of tinnitus, providing some relief and making it easier to cope with during the day and at night.
I’ve created a video that focuses specifically on tinnitus music therapy and how it can support those dealing with increased tinnitus sounds. If you’re interested, I’d love for you to check it out. Remember, you’re not alone, and there are resources available to help you find some comfort. Take care!
