There’s definitely been some posts on this forum about B12. I wondered about it myself. Think you have to check your levels before you try it . It can be unsafe for your system if you don’t need B12. I think you are right though there has been reports of others finding B12 helping tinnitus
I have taken it for years, the sublingual kind, for my thyroid as was wondering if it was my imagination my tinnitus was getting louder when I stopped
What is the sublingual kind mean, please. I’ve been wondering for a while now whether B12 would help me . How do we know if we are short of this B vitamin. I asked my doctor to do blood tests . Think it may have covered deficiencies . Any ideas?
I’m told B12 can diminish as it gets to your stomach so better to take one you slip under your tongue. Many years ago I was advised by an elderly doctor to take B vitamins to ward off dementia. Who knows
I bought some about three months ago as there were positive references to it here. This is the first time I’ve splashed out on anything for THaving taken it regularly since then I can report that it was a waste of money - no difference to T at all.
Just hope when I see ENT guy in February, if we’re not in lockdown, he can come up with something Thanks for responding
Hi Hylda,
There can be connections between a B12 deficiency and the onset of tinnitus, and some people do report subjective improvement in the condition when it is the primary factor responsible for the condition.
Our guidance on B12 and T is here - tinnitus.org.uk/tinnitus-an....
If a B12 deficiency isn't the only factor in play, then supplements will only be relevant for the lack of this vitamin in a diet - they may make only minor differences to tinnitus perception.
Does this apply to pulsatile tinnitus too which I have?
Hi Hylda. The identified causes of pulsatile tinnitus - tinnitus.org.uk/pulsatile-t... - are mostly connected to changes in our blood flow and sometimes even how much we notice those changes.
On a really basic level - which I'm always a fan of - if blood flow in your neck has changed slightly, it does make sense that you would aware of this given the proximity it has to your ear.
The weird quality of that sound and why we're starting to hear it can be an adjustment which we have to make. It can be more noticeable if we have minor hearing loss - sounds outside the body which would mask this blood flow noise are not as easy to hear.
The reasons for that change in blood flow can vary, as our guidance advises, so it's worth following up with an ENT department.
Thank you so much
I can promise you Hylda that in my case Tinnitus is definitely not in my mind, I decided from the start not to take any kind of medication or supplements that are supposed to reduce my Tinnitus. I am concentrating on learning my body to live with it.
I understand why sufferers are prepared to try anything.
Take Care

There are studies which show a link between B12 and folate levels and tinnitus.
Since there are multiple 'causes' for tinnitus I guess it will only help if low B12 is the cause of yours but if you feel it's louder, it probably is. You know your body better than anyone else!
Maybe see how you go when you're back on the B12.
I've just checked my latest results and I think I'm going to up my B12 and folate for a bit and get my levels higher.
I take a daily B12 supplement as being vegan my system is likely to be deficient and it’s necessary for the body and brain to function properly. Since I started, I have noticed a marked decrease in my tinnitus - whether this is due directly to the B12 or a good side effect from the B12 improving other functions, I don’t know, but I’m happy with the relief it brings.
I haven't found it makes any difference. That said, I was taking B12 tablets before my PT developed and still am after, mainly as it was suggested it gives any energy boost. Mine are swallowing type 1000ug.
I’ve been having 12 weekly b12 injections for many years prior to getting tinnitus; I still have them now & my tinnitus is still exactly the same ☹️
