Been given a tablet called amitriptyline by my doctor. For tinnitus,Has anyone else been prescribed this 10mg tablet once a day x
Been given prescription of amitriptyline - Tinnitus UK
Been given prescription of amitriptyline
Think he's given you this to help you relax a bit as tinnitus is stressful , especially if your new to it. That's a low dose , you should be ok. I've taken it before. Beware though some people on this site think certain drugs can increase the tinnitus. As you may know there is no cure for tinnitus. Good luck. Just see what suits you and your coping with tinnitus can be challenging. I am at my calmest when out walking my poodles and listening to the outside , like birds singing etc
Hello Thankyou for your reply xI’ve had it 26 years but habituated x
It recently started 4 weeks ago following major surgery ( 4 weeks post op)
So hoping to habituate again x
Oh I see, well very good luck to you .
Yes it’s in my right ear x
Hello rabbit,Yes I have hissing in my right ear x
It started four weeks ago ( four weeks after major surgery) thankfully everything came back benign and I am so pleased…. I cried,,
It’s been a year of chronic pain before my operation and I am so relieved it’s over….
My tinnitus started when I was 29 and I remember feeling so alone and scared…. It habituated slowly over the years x
I truly don’t know why it’s started again after my operation. And it had made me so upset…..
I do hope it settles x
I shall do more walking as soon as I can x
I was born 65 😊
Oh dear you really have been through a lot . Let’s hope it settles soon . I live in hope that my tinnitus might leave me one day . Mine is right ear too.
I hope so too x Yes it has been a long journey x
But I am so lucky to get my operation x
Is your T quite loud x
Hi Eleanor , it’s not loud but I have trouble with a lot of pressure , like a fan oven at times . It’s odd . I’ve had the usual mri and ct and nothing wrong with those scans . Have you had any scans done ?
Hello rabbit,I’ve had no scans and I’ve had it 26 years x it’s a combination of noises same noise I’ve always had but four weeks ago got a bit louder. So I notice it
Hoping it will slide into the background over time xxxx
The only scans I had done were on my tummy last year, mri on everything…..
Ct scans and colonoscopies, mri on small bowel, pelvis etc…..
Though the doctor has referred me to Kendal tinnitus audiology department…. So that’s good 😊
I will get some tests done on it x
Your description of a lower fan sound and pressure sound more like "The Hum", not tinnitus. See
thehum.info
Also, there are Facebook support groups.
The Hum is hearing low frequency noise, like an engine running, usually worse at night when it is quiet. Scans do not show anything. There is a theory that it is a change within the cochlea. The chap running the website has decided it is generated internally.
Hello Guineapiggy,Thank you very much for your very interesting information.. I have been trying to find out more information about my situation as I have been convinced that my situation has been slightly different to the majority of others. I find when I lay down though that my tinnitus or whatever it is is actually better. When I walk around and try to do things it is then that I find it on the borders of intolerable where the big pressure in my head builds up like a balloon blowing up or a fan oven . . Any
More info will be useful . How is your tinnitus please??
Thanks once again .
My tinnitus is a very high pitched noise, more in my right ear. It doesn't bother me. The hum is in my left ear. Usually, the hum is worse at night so your noise doesn't seem to behave the same. The Hum Facebook groups may be of help as people there describe all sorts of symptoms including daytime problems.

Don't know if they will help. Good luck.
Are the pressure changes related to the change in atmospheric barometric pressure and is your tinnitus louder when the air pressure is higher? I know that I can sometimes have headaches when the air pressure is building up - for example before a thunderstorm and those headaches can make my tinnitus sound worse. Migraines can also make my tinnitus feel worse, but those feel different, as those affect my eyes as well.
Thank you Jan for writing to me .I don’t really know the answer to your question about pressure changes . All I know is is that my tinnitus seems very different to the usual tinnitus. It feels very full on in my right ear full of pressure but I don’t know where it’s coming from. Like the sound you get when you put a fan oven on in the kitchen. Most people get ringing, singing, screeching , whistling , hissing, mines none of those things just this fullness of pressure and fan oven . Any ideas, I’m wondering if it’s blocked Eustachian tubes . Nobody wants to help because nobody knows I suppose.Hope your alright
It could be that your tubes are blocked, maybe a mild decongestant may help with that, everything is connected in some ways. I was just thinking that changes in the air pressure may give you headaches and that can make the tinnitus worse. High, or low blood pressure can affect tinnitus and your balance as well. Sometimes trying to find what it is not by a process of elimination is easier than finding out what the problem is!😂
If you put amitriptyline into the search box top right you’ll find quite a few posts over the last year.
My GP offered me amitriptyline in October last year to help me relax and sleep. After much thought I didn't take it because one of the side effects listed is tinnitus. Admittedly only 1 in 100 people. Perhaps you could discuss with your GP.
I think your gp gave you this to look as he is doing something for you, cannot see any benefit of 10mg of an anti depressant for T, just my opinion, hope things improve for you, be patient, it’s not an easy journey.
Thankyou x I’ve had tinnitus for 26 years but habituated slowly….
Unfortunately I had major surgery eight weeks ago and it came back louder four weeks post op…..
After a horrendous stressful year of pain before my operation..
things came back benign this week x
So I am delighted…. Just hope my tinnitus will settle…. Over time x
I havnt taken the amitriptyline as I’ve been referred to the tinnitus clinic nhs at Kendal x Thankyou fir your response x
I really appreciate your reply x
Hi Eleanor1989I started with Tinnitus in early May this year and my Dr put me on Amitriptyline 10mg to help me sleep and with the anxiety and the awful panic attacks I was having. I happily took it as I'd not slept with the noise and was exhausted. It didn't make me sleep, so I doubled it to 20mg, still nothing. For the last week or so I have taken 30mg, I am sleeping better, I still feel anxious but not every day and the tinnitus is more of a hiss. I don't know if that's the amitriptyline or whether I'm just adjusting to the tinnitus. What I have noticed is it gets more bothersome after I have taken it. I will stick with it a while longer but I wonder if it's not for me. Xx
Hello xYes I’ve had T for 26 years but had habituated over the years x
However I had complicated major surgery 8 weeks ago and my T started 4 weeks post op…..
I’m hoping it will subside x
I’m sure yours will eventually x
I hope your ok x
I never had a forum like this all those years ago x
Going to tinnitus audiology as I’ve been referred x
Keep in touch x
How old are you mind me asking x
Hi I'm 51. It came on suddenly from nowhere. No loud noise trauma or anything. I'm having some good days and trying to focus on those when I have the have the bad days. The tone of my T. has changed since I started on amitriptyline, but its keeping the panic attacks at bay, and I'm sleeping a little better so I'm scared of not taking it. X
Funny you should say that......my husband thinks it's menopausal. Xx
I was prescribed it from my Doc last Sep after a neck injury, after a few days of taking it I woke up one morning thinking next door had the builders in, unfortunately it was my first tinnitus spike ( I’ve had T for 26 yrs ) has it for 3 months, and the senior Doctor admitted at the practice that I should not of been given Amitrip as it can make T worse - so don’t go near it.
No I’m not going to,,,, my tinnitus I’ve had for 26 years aswell…. But got louder4 weeks post op after major surgery eight weeks ago….My chemist questioned it as he has tinnitus, and sleeps with a fan on and white noise x
No I’m definitely not going to take it….
I hope yours settles is it still there…
I had my spike for 3 months then it went, then about 4-6 weeks after I banged my head very hard that started another spike which is louder abs that I e had for about 14 weeks now, but coping ok thanks
I think I'm going to ask the Dr if I can come off it. I've only been on it a month. It doesn't help me sleep much better which was the reason I was given it, I still get panicky, there must be something better for me. I mean it can't suit everyone can it??
I should think you are after such a big op. Xx I hope you make a speedy recovery and your tinnitus settles back down xx
Hello, I’m new to the forum but not T, I’ve had it for 21 years (noise induced) mine Went through the roof mid March and It has stayed that way alone with fullness, discomfort in both ears - I’m on sertraline (mornings) and amitriptyline (evenings) I was really not coping and had a panic attack, i’m only on 10 mg of amitriptyline and it does make me sleep like a baby (I wasn’t sleeping without it). Can’t say the T is any worse for it.
