hi ellie
i take kelp and levothyoxine, i was warned it can alter the thyoxine levels and i take it sometimes i cant say ive seen any benefits, then again y ou prob have to take large amounts regular and not now and then. di
I take Vit C, iron and selenium but I take them at the end of the day away from the T4. Some also take zinc and Vit D (I think).
The Vit C is to help with the iron absorbtion (I am low iron) and the selenium is to help with conversion of T4 to T3. Vit D (not sure if you can take this as a suppliement but my endo has mentioned it) is because a lot of thyroid patients can have low Vit D and Zinc is for healthy cells (presumably since our bodies get damaged by the underactive thyroid).
Hi,
If possible buy Dr Peatfields book as it has a lot of info with regard to vitamin and other supplementation to help . It also explains if/why they should be taken.
Hi
you need to be cautious about taking kelp if you have auto immune hypothyroidism - kelp is a seaweed rich in iodine which is why it is recommended for low thyroid but it can exacerbate auto immune problems
personally I would avoid kelp. Instead I would suggest Iron supplement plus vit C to aid its absorbtion taken as far away from my dose of T4 as poss. (I take my T4 at bed time and iron at lunchtime when there is less likelihood of me taking it with milk which inhibits absorbtion)
