Definitely thyroid disease can cause low B12.

Suspicions exist that low B12 can affect the thyroid but the story is still unfolding.

A lot of thyroid disease is autoimmune. A lot of B12 deficiency is auotimmune. And if you have one autoimmune disease, there seems a much higher chance of having another.

is pernicious anaemia autoimmune Rod? I think it is as with P.A. you have intrinsic factor antibodies right? I have those by the way.....

so far have negative lupus and negative anti-nuclear antibodies and negative coeliac....

I believe that the form of PA in which you have IFab definitely is.

Where you have gastric parietal cell antibodies, well, yes that too. But some reading suggests that GPCab are reasonably common in people with Hashimoto's - but their number tends to drop over time and might represent a significant degree of recovery.

But what is more difficult is that GPCab can contribute to low stomach acidity and that might be the direct cause of low B12 rather than solely low levels of Intrinsic Factor.

Not 100% sure that the naming of PA always uses the same definition.

I don't have the GPCantibodies, only the intrinsic factor antibodies and I believe I don't have hashimoto either, never had symptoms of hashi's and antibodies never higher than 9 on a range of 0-100 :)

thanks

Hi Helvella,

Thanks for this, I do feel better for taking vit B12 but had my doubts that this was the solution to all of my symptoms

It is also believed that a lack of B12 makes it more difficult for thyroid hormones to get into the cells and be used but, as Rod says, this is not clear yet.

If you have an autoimmune condition you are more likely to get others. I had Pernicious Anaemia first. On your video it stated that even if you supplement if you have problems with your stomach, B12 may still not be absorbed properly.
