I hope someone out there can give me an answer to this. I am considering bariatric surgery and I am hopeing someone may be able give me advice on the possible effect my over active thyroid may have on achieving an effective weight loss, if I choose to go down this route.
Many thanks

Hiya Lesley, this is a differcult question to answer, as I feel for you and understand your struggles with weight, I've been big all my life and struggle to loss weight it's a battle every day, my friend had it done a year ago she hasn't got thyroid problems but just because she is big bless her, but she really does struggle with it as she can't eat out, she suffers with chest pains, sickness, I'm not saying everyone has these problem and some do lose a lot of weight, Sorry if this doesn't help,
I know absolutely nothing about surgery for weight loss, so the only thing that comes to mind is the fact that the dose of replacement hormone for hypothyroidism is supposedly meant to correlate with 'lean body mass'. This might suggest that you'll need to keep a close eye on your thyroid levels with regular testing (and adjust any medication accordingly).
A friend (also thyroid problems) of mine has the band and says its money well spent... obviously had a few teething problems but nothing you cant work out in time.
My doctor has suggested it for me and I too am thinking about it.
I was put on Orlistat (prescription strength) I lasted only 2 weeks as I felt sick to the bone and had to take time off work which is not good as I live on my own and am a contractor so don't get paid for days out the office.
I would suggest that you research all options and talk to your doctor about the pro's and con's...
Thank you for your reply I appreciate the time you have taken to reply to my question. I too was put on orlistat some years ago, in fact I think it caused my gall stones, (side effects), obviously didn't work either.
This was exactly what I wanted to know, I realise we are all different but its good to know of at least one other person who has had a good result.
I don't think I was hyper for long enough to loose weight. Tho I did loose a little. Then I went hypo with tag of 171!!!! So I was at rick bottom. My temp went down to 31 c hypothermia. Face was swollen legs swollen no energy to even make a cup of tea. I then piled on 1 1/2 stone I was eating fruit & veg so I couldnt cut down, but the weight just piles on. Any ideas to help loose weight? Does t3 help with this? Help
