Hi, I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid in 2005. About 10 years ago I had a problem with a tendon in my hip. Walking was very painful and I couldn’t use my leg to go upstairs. Physio and steroid injections did nothing and then a friend suggested turmeric. It settled down within 5 days and I had no further problems until November 2024.
Since then it’s been up and down and 5 weeks ago was so bad I couldn’t put any weight on that leg. It’s improving slowly and today I saw my podiatrist. After explaining why I was walking with a crutch she asked if I had a thyroid problem which surprised me but she has 3 other patients with both tendon and thyroid problems. All were referred to endocrinologists for further investigation. Has anyone else had this?

Thyroid hormones are needed by every single cell in your body to function correctly. So, if there's not enough in your system, problems can occur anywhere and everywhere.
GG your so Right. We don't realize how important Thyroids are for us until things start feeling not right for us. Literally from our Heads to our Toes and Everything in between. In my personal experiences I feel that there is not Enough Awareness when it comes to Thyroids.
10 years ago it was 500mg Turmeric. It was suggested 3 tablets/capsules for a week and then reduce to 2. After 5 days my pain had gone so I dropped to 2 then. Since then they’ve added bioperine to turmeric but it’s not helping this time.
Presumably this bioperine was added to make it more effective. So often not the case. I think I might give it another go though, since you had some success. Thank you for your reply.
It’s worth a try but doesn’t work for everyone. If you’re on any other medication you should check with a pharmacist that there are no interactions. I know you can’t take it with blood thinners.
If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test
If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal
IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 3-5 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results
In days before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12 if last test result serum B12 was below 500 or active B12 (private test) under 70
Wow, that’s a lot to take in. I’m currently taking 100mcg daily with 25mcg every other day because they won’t provide 12.5mcg where I am. At present brands are changing on what my pharmacist can get hold of. It’s always taken first thing in the morning with just a glass of water and breakfast an hour later.
I think they only test my TSH and I have no idea whether it’s autoimmune or not.
I take Vitamin D, Vitamic C with zinc and Turmeric with Biopeperine.
My recent annual blood test showed a TSH level of 0.50 and that was 4 hours after taking my Levothyroxine. I’ll remember not to take it next time! All other tests came back normal. I don’t think my vitamin levels were checked though.
I have a telephone consultation with my GP next week so will ask. I can’t say I’ve noticed any change in my general health whichever brand I’m on but I’ll take more note now.
