Sensitive question - has anyone had any experience with miscarriage and do you know if it was thyroid related? I’ve got congenital hypothyroidism and I’ve got a 3 year old - no problems with pregnancy etc but this year I’ve had 3 miscarriages not sure if it’s just very unlucky or it’s related to thyroid or not

Miscarriage with under active thyroid
There are different reference ranges for pre-conception and also for 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Some labs put these on their reports when doing thyroid tests.
Ranges vary from lab to lab but here is an example that was in a member's post yesterday :

And for conception and a healthy pregnancy TSH should be below 2.5
If you don't have your test results, always ask for a print out of results of any tests you have done. Check to see what your TSH was when you miscarried.
I would discuss your plans for pregnancy with your GP so that you can work together to get your levels where they need to be for a successful pregnancy.
I went to the Thyroid conference this year and the team at Cardiff had done research on women trying to conceive whilst hypo..
They said they got the best results when increasing.. (quite a LOT) womens thyroid medication in the 6 weeks before they conceived to 8 weeks after conception reduced miscarriage by a very significant proportion.. It may be worth.. moving to Cardiff?
My daughter had a perfectly normal first pregnancy and birth. Her new GP wasn’t happy with her thyroid levels (although low TSH and High T4 that’s when she felt really well) and lowered her dose which I was worried about. 10 weeks into her second pregnancy, she miscarried. It could have been a coincidence, but I gave her lots of information to take to her new GP, her thyroxine was out back to its previous levels and she carried full term.
Hopefully, with the correct thyroid levels, you will conceive and carry to full term.
I am in the same position as you ..minus the miscarriages. I have a 3 year old and want to have another baby soon, but was told that miscarriages were likely and to wait until my levels were stable. I have been waiting 2 years to start trying to conceive and I am so scared. My heart goes out to you. Sorry for your loses !
I’ve had 4 miscarriages over 2 years and not managed to keep a pregnancy. It’s hard not to blame my thyroid issues even though I’ve been trying to keep it optimal. Xx
Hi, I havent got any experience myself but a friend with thyroid problems had similar problems and was told by a specialist that when you get pregnant the baby takes a lot of your thyroid hormones so your dose should need increasing by a lot. Not sure who is best to speak to, an endocrinologist I would imagine?
Sorry I cant be of any more help
I believe it's quite common when under treated
Thyroid is directly linked with procreational hormones. Least that's what I've been told by my doc.
I've experienced an m/c way before finding out that my thyroid is hyperactive and procreational hormones almost non-existant. Something started changing only after I started working with an endobiogenic. Much recommended for these issues.
There is a professor that you can be referred to who specialises and she does studies. You can be referred to her - at the university hospital in Walsgrave Coventry.
It is most probably related to your hypothyroidism and the following may be informative. Many women can either have difficulty in becoming pregnant or have miscarriages both of which is distressing.

Important to test vitamin levels too - vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Hi I lost 2 between my 2 and I was born without a Thyroid. And the Doctor said it was to do with not having a Thyroid Gland and it can cause a few problems. They said I was Lucky to have had my 2 and both was born OK. And now they are both grown up Adults my Daughter is 33 and my Son is 31. So all the best for the future.
I had 9 miscarriages in the years after a partial thyroidectomy. Done because I had a nodule (harmless) on one side of the gland. I was diagnosed Hypothyroid about 11 years ago (after 2 years trying to convince family doc something was wrong). After my 1st endo heard my details he said I should have been tested annually for thyroid disease. The hospital had never bothered. Nobody has ever said the miscarriages were due to thyroid problems but they could never give me a reason for the loss. I asked my current endo about it but he was non committal. So I can only say I believe them to be because of an undiagnosed thyroid problem until someone has the bottle to tell the truth. Should also say I'm 71 now so I don't see that happening!
When I was 40 I had a miscarrage but I did not know I had a thyroid problem until I was 54.
Nobody mentioned thyroid, I thought it was just bad luck and my age, I had two children years before that.
Valencia30, The simple answer is that yes, miscarriage and difficulty conceiving can be caused by being hypothyroid. But getting treatment optimal should help a lot.
