T3 trial from NHS endocrinologist

Yesterday I had an appointment with my endocrinologist. I managed to get a next day appointment after a scan . Scan was not showing problems . When I went in I showed him my medi check bloods id been doing and high lighted percentages. (T3 had been consistently low ) He said I didn’t need to be doing that in which I reply I do as GPs don’t look at whole picture. Long story short he asked what I wanted to do about treatment , I just said what do you think and he offered a trial on T3 for 2 months and go back to see him . He did say there was no evidence T3 is was helpful and there was down side .

He gave me prescription for 5 mg once a day . Question best time to take ? And will it be ok to take it all in one go . I know it’s as small amount but at least I get to try it . He did drop my levo yo 50 . I know it’s been said that’s not the best way to do it but I thought take this chance to try . I do have a lot of spare levo so I can go back up if I need . All my vitamins etc are good now .

thank you in advance for any replies.

Great news that you’ve been offered a trial of Liothyronine. What is your current Levo dose (before recommendation to drop to 50mcg?)

75

I personally wouldn’t reduce by 25mcg - consider dropping by 12.5mcg as a compromise. I would add the 5mcg Lio to your daily dose of Levo. Monitor how you feel. For me, it wasn’t a ‘eureka’ moment, more a steady improvement over time.

I’m hoping for a bit of improvement 🤞

Well if you using your results from the ones posted on here -2 months ago -

your T4 was just 66% through the range so doubt it needs reducing ;

test results 2 months ago

Free T4 (fT4) 18.6 pmol/L (12 - 22)

Ft4 only 66.0% through range

Which brand of Levo are you taking for 75mcg

Crescent for the 75

Unusual we don’t often see members getting Crescent

I would agree with Buddy195 about initially only reducing by 12.5mcg daily (or 50mcg and 75mcg on alternate days)

When adding T3 it’s very common for Ft4 level to drop a bit even without reducing Levo dose

Thank you for your reply and knowledge on this subject. I was going to say something but I thought leave it I got him to offer the meds without asking so didn’t want to push my luck . I’m proud of myself for staying calm and asking the question on conversion percentages. He didn’t really seem that interested . He did take copies of my bloods . The endo is on the thyroid private list but not one known for giving T3 .

Also is Crescent ok in the world of good meds ?

If it’s suits you it’s good

It’s relatively new brand

Until recently only Teva made 75mcg tablets

Other 75mcg option now is Vencamil

Vencamil is lactose free and mannitol free. originally only available as 100mcg only, but 25mcg, 50mcg and 75mcg tablets became available Sept 2024

Prior to March 2023 Vencamil was called Aristo

Vencamil often very well tolerated/best option for many people

How to get prescription written for Vencamil

How to get Vencamil stocked at your local pharmacy

Presumably you will now be getting 50mcg tablets prescribed
